Anthony Ernest Oppenheimer (born June 1937) is a British diamond dealer and racehorse owner. Early life He was born in June 1937, the son of Sir Philip Oppenheimer, and his wife Pamela Fenn Stirling. Sir Philip Jack Oppenheimer (29 October 1911 – 8 October 1995) was a British diamond dealer and racehorse owner. Philip Oppenheimer was born on 29 October 1911, the son of Otto Oppenheimer. He was educated at Harrow School and Jesus College, Cambridge, where he was captain of the boxing team. In 1935, he married Pamela Fenn Stirling. They had one son, Anthony Oppenheimer, and one daughter. It is run at the Curragh over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs (2,414 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in July. It is Ireland's equivalent of The Oaks, a famous race in England. History The event was established in 1895, and it was originally contested over a mile. It was extended to its present length in 1915. The field usually includes fillies which ran previously in the Epsom Oaks, and several have won both races. It is run at Leopardstown over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs (2,012 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in September. History The event was established in 1976, and it was initially held at Leopardstown as the Joe McGrath Memorial Stakes. It was named in memory of Joe McGrath (1887–1966), the founder of the Irish Hospitals' Sweepstake and a successful racehorse owner. The race was transferred to Phoenix Park and renamed the Phoenix Champion Stakes in 1984. Its present title was introduced in 1991, when the event returned to Leopardstown after the closure of its former venue. She was initially known as Merveille, but was later renamed Vermeille. She did not have a remarkable racing career, but was highly successful as a broodmare.
