Anthony Medel
Anthony Medel (born March 28, 1978) is a male beach volleyball player from the United States who won the gold medal at the NORCECA Circuit 2009 at Guatemala playing with Hans Stolfus. Medel has also participated in the Association of Volleyball Professionals tournaments since 1999. Personal life Medel has continued with the sport of volleyball by coaching club, junior high, and high school teams while pursuing his master's degree in education. Beach Volleyball
Beach volleyball is a team sport played by two teams of two or more players on a sand court divided by a net. Similar to indoor volleyball, the objective of the game is to send the ball over the net and to ground it on the opponent's side of the court. Each team also works in unison to prevent the opposing team from grounding the ball on their side of the court. Teams are allowed up to three touches to return the ball across the net, and individual players may not touch the ball twice consecutively except after a touch off an attempted block. Making a block touch leaves only two more touches before the ball must be hit over. The ball is put in play with a serve—a hit by the server from behind the rear court boundary over the net to the opponents. The receiving team typically uses their three touches to pass the ball, set it up for an attack, and then attack the ball by sending it back over the net. The 2009 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit was a North American beach volleyball tour. The tour consisted of eight tournaments in both genders. After the decision of the Puerto Rican Volleyball Federation, cancelling its player participation in the Mexican steps of the tour, due to the H1N1 flu outbreak in Mexico, the NORCECA board decided to postpone the Mexican steps from May to late September. The Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) is the biggest and longest-running professional beach volleyball tour in the United States. Founded in 1983, the AVP is headquartered in Newport Beach, California. The AVP operates as a 3-tiered development system with AVPFirst, a youth program; AVPNext, a developmental circuit; and the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour itself. History 19831997: Origins and early history The AVP was formed in 1983 as a player's union. Following a dispute with a private promoter at the 1984 World Championships in Redondo Beach, California, the AVP began organizing its own men's tour in 1984.
