Anthony Lowe
Anthony Peter Lowe AP (born 16 March 1962) is a British-Australian mathematical physicist and actuary. He previously served as chief executive officer of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, and is a frequent media commentator on prostate cancer and prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing. Life and career Lowe was born in Malta and attended The Perse School in Cambridge. He pursued a degree in mathematics at the University of Cambridge, completing his studies in 1984 with a Master of Mathematics degree. He later obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in theoretical physics from the University of Southampton. Following the completion of his Ph.D., Lowe joined the consulting actuaries firm R Watson & Sons, where he underwent training. Prostate Cancer Screening
Prostate cancer screening is the screening process used to detect undiagnosed prostate cancer in men without signs or symptoms. When abnormal prostate tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat and cure, but it is unclear if early detection reduces mortality rates. Screening precedes a diagnosis and subsequent treatment. The digital rectal examination (DRE) is one screening tool, during which the prostate is manually assessed through the wall of the rectum. The second screening tool is the measurement of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood. The evidence remains insufficient to determine whether screening with PSA or DRE reduces mortality from prostate cancer. Ian Olver
Ian Olver AM (born 10 May 1953) is an Australian medical oncologist, cancer researcher and bio-ethicist. He is a former chief executive officer of Cancer Council Australia and a noted authority and media commentator on cancer issues. In 2011 he was appointed to the Order of Australia for service to medical oncology as a clinician, researcher, administrator and mentor, and to the community through leadership roles with cancer control organisations. His main research interests are new anticancer drug studies, symptom control, bio-ethics and psycho-oncology. A cancer survivor is a person with cancer of any type who is still living. Whether a person becomes a survivor at the time of diagnosis or after completing treatment, whether people who are actively dying are considered survivors, and whether healthy friends and family members of the cancer patient are also considered survivors, varies from group to group.
