Antenna (band)
Antenna was an American indie rock band active from 1991 to 1994. The group was put together in Bloomington, Indiana by John Strohm and Freda Love, who had previously played together in the group Blake Babies. After adding local musicians Jacob Smith and Vess Ruhtenberg to the lineup, they began recording some of the songs Strohm had written while a member of the Blake Babies. Their debut full-length followed on Mammoth Records not long afterwards. After the departure of Ruhtenberg and Love, Patrick Spurgeon joined the group and an EP, ''Sleep'', was released in 1992. The full-length '' Hideout'' followed in 1993, with Ed Ackerson filling in on second guitar for the departed Ruhtenberg. Love returned for the ''For Now'' EP, also issued in 1993, but it was the group's last before dissolving. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Independent labels such as Flying Nun Records, Flying Nun began to promote the scene across New Zealand, inspiring key college rock bands in the United States such as Pavement (band), Pavement, Pixies (band), Pixies and R.E.M. Bloomington is a city in and the county seat of Monroe County, Indiana, Monroe County in the central region of the U.S. state of Indiana. John Strohm (musician)
John Strohm (or John P. Strohm, born March 23, 1967 in Bloomington, Indiana) is an American musician, singer, and lawyer. He began his musical career playing drum set in Indiana's punk rock scene, then moved to Boston in 1985 and switched to guitar. With Juliana Hatfield and Freda Love (then Freda Boner) he co-founded the indie rock trio Blake Babies in 1986. In 1994 the band Velo-Deluxe with Strohm as the frontman released their only album ''Superelastic'' through Mammoth Records. Strohm also played drums in The Lemonheads from 1987 - 1989 and guitar during the years 1993-1994 and 1996-1997. Freda Love Smith (born Freda Boner, later used the stage name Freda Love) is an American musician, journalist, and non-fiction author. Smith is known as a drummer and vocalist for several alternative rock bands, including the Blake Babies, Antenna, Mysteries of Life, Some Girls and Sunshine Boys. She is the author of ''Red Velvet Underground'', a memoir and cookbook published in 2015. Smith attended Indiana University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in general studies. Blake Babies were an American college rock band formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts. The three primary members were John Strohm, Freda Love, and Juliana Hatfield. They recorded three albums before splitting up in 1991. They reformed to record a new album in 1999, and again in 2016. Mammoth Records was an independent record label founded in 1989 by Jay Faires in the Carrboro area of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. ''Hideout'' is an album by the American indie rock band Antenna, released in 1993. It is the band's second album. Production The album was produced by Antenna and Paul Mahern, and was recorded at Studio 512, in Indianapolis. Patrick Spurgeon had replaced Freda Love on drums; the band also brought in guitarist Ed Ackerson. Ed Ackerson
Ed Ackerson (July 18, 1965 – October 4, 2019) was an American musician and producer from Minneapolis. He produced or engineered dozens of records including works by prominent artists such as The Jayhawks, The Replacements, Motion City Soundtrack, Soul Asylum, Golden Smog, Dave Davies of The Kinks, Wesley Stace, Mason Jennings, Mark Mallman, John Strohm, Brian Setzer, Lizzo, Pete Yorn, The Wallflowers, Rhett Miller of The Old 97s, Jeremy Messersmith, and Juliana Hatfield. He owned a recording studio in Minneapolis, Flowers, and co-founded the Susstones record label. Ackerson led several notable Twin Cities pop/rock bands including Polara and The 27 Various, and released several solo records under his own name.
