Antazavė Manor is a manor house, residential manor in Antazavė. Currently it is occupied by Antazavė care homes. In one of the manor rooms, Stanislava Kirailytė founded Antazavė region Museum. History The Radziwiłł family In the 16th-17th centuries, large areas of North-Eastern Lithuania were ruled by the Biržai-Dubingiai branch of the Radziwiłł family. The land of Dusetos-Antazavė belonged to Krzysztof Radziwiłł, Krzysztof and Janusz Radziwiłł (1579–1620), Janusz Radziwiłł (1579-1620). In 1669, after the death of Janusz’s son, Bogusław Radziwiłł (1620-1669),the last representative of the Biržai-Dubingiai branch of the Radziwiłł family, the lands passed to the Broël-Plater family. The Broël-Plater Family The Broël-Platers were of Baltic Germans, German descent: their great-grandfather was a Knight of the Livonian Order. Manor House
A manor house was historically the main residence of the lord of the manor. The house formed the administrative centre of a manor in the European feudal system; within its great hall were held the lord's manorial courts, communal meals with manorial tenants and great banquets. The term is today loosely applied to various country houses, frequently dating from the Late Middle Ages, which formerly housed the landed gentry. Manor houses were sometimes fortified, albeit not as fortified as castles, and were intended more for show than for defencibility. They existed in most European countries where feudalism was present. Function The lord of the manor may have held several properties within a county or, for example in the case of a feudal baron, spread across a kingdom, which he occupied only on occasional visits.
