Annual Of The Department Of Antiquities Of Jordan
The Department of Antiquities is a government department in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan with responsibility for archaeological research and cultural heritage management. It is part of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. The department was established in 1923 in what was then the Emirate of Transjordan, a protectorate of the British Empire. Its responsibilities are legislated for in laws no. 24 of 1934, no. 21 of 1988 and no. 22 of 2004. The department has published an academic journal, the ''Annual of the Department of Antiquities of Jordan'', since 1951, and has organised an international conference on the history and archaeology of Jordan every three years since 1980. Ministry Of Tourism And Antiquities (Jordan)
The Ministry of Tourism & Antiquities is the Egyptian government organization which serves to protect and preserve the heritage and ancient history of Egypt. In December 2019 it was merged into the Ministry of Tourism with Khaled al-Anani retaining his function. History It was formed from the Supreme Council of Antiquities in 2011 during the presidency of Hosni Mubarak to deal with the security and theft of Egyptian antiquities. Grave robbers have been looting ancient Egyptian tombs nearly continuously for well over 4 thousand years. The Ministry of Antiquities works to get the items restored back to Egypt, whenever possible. Over the years, thousands of stolen antiquities have made their way back to Egypt. Abdul-Karim Gharaybeh
Abdul-Karim Mahmud Gharaybeh (20 June 1923 – 22 February 2014) was a Jordanian historian, academic and politician. Early life Gharaybeh was born in Irbid on 20 June 1923. He started studying medicine but after his first anatomy lesson changed his major to history. In 1950 he earned his PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. He was one of the first Jordanians to earn a PhD. Career In 1956 he was the first Jordanian to be named Director General of the Department of Antiquities of Jordan. He succeeded Gerald Lankester Harding, who had headed the department between 1939 and 1956. Gharaybeh was himself succeeded by Saeed al-Durrah the same year he was appointed. He was a professor of history at the University of Jordan between 1962 and 1997. Gharaybeh was appointed senator in the twenty-first Senate of Jordan, serving from 17 November 2005 until 28 November 2007. Gerald Lankester Harding
Gerald Lankester Harding (8 December 1901 – 11 February 1979) was a British archaeologist who was the director of the Department of Antiquities of Jordan from 1936 to 1956. His tenure spanned the period in which the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered and brought to public awareness. Without his efforts many of the scrolls might have disappeared into private collections never to be seen again. Life Harding was born in Tientsin, North China in 1901, but spent his childhood from age two to 13 in Singapore. He returned to the UK with his parents in 1913, but his father was killed in World War I, and Harding earned his living in a number of jobs from the ages of 16 to 25. During this time, he became fascinated by Egyptian hieroglyphics and eventually joined the evening classes run by the distinguished Egyptologist Dr Margaret Murray. Tawfik Abu al-Huda ( ar, توفيق ابو الهدى) (also known as Tawfik Pasha Abul-Huda) (1894 – 1 July 1956) served several terms as the 7th Prime Minister of Jordan. First he served as Prime minister of Transjordan from September 28, 1938, to October 15, 1944, and he served another term from December 28, 1947, to April 12, 1950. Between July 25, 1951, and May 5, 1953, and from May 4, 1954, to May 30, 1955, he served as Prime Minister of Jordan. During his last term as Prime Minister, he tried to consolidate the power of King Hussein by holding parliamentary elections which many accused of being fraudulent.
