Anniston, Alabama
Anniston is the county seat of Calhoun County in Alabama and is one of two urban centers/principal cities of and included in the Anniston-Oxford Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 23,106. According to 2019 Census estimates, the city had a population of 21,287. Named "The Model City" by Atlanta newspaperman Henry W. Grady for its careful planning in the late 19th century, the city is situated on the slope of Blue Mountain. History Civil War Though the surrounding area was settled much earlier, the mineral resources in the area of Anniston were not exploited until the Civil War. The Confederate States of America then operated an iron furnace near present-day downtown Anniston, until it was finally destroyed by raiding Union cavalry in early 1865. Later, cast iron for sewer systems became the focus of Anniston's industrial output. Cast iron pipe, also called soil pipe, was popular until the advent of plastic pipe in the 1960s. ...

Anniston (Amtrak Station)
Anniston station is an Amtrak train station at 126 West 4th Street in Anniston, Alabama. It is served by the passenger train. The station was originally designed by Milo R. Hanker and built in 1925 for the Southern Railway, and was one of the last railroad-operated active passenger stations in the country, as the ''Southern Crescent'' (predecessor to the current Amtrak train) was still operated by the Southern well into the Amtrak era. In 2008, the city completed a full rehabilitation of the classical revival depot, primarily using funds obtained through the Federal Highway Administration's Transportation Enhancements (TE) program. USS Montgomery (C-9)
The fourth USS ''Montgomery'' (C-9), the lead ship of her class, was an unprotected cruiser in the United States Navy authorized in the Naval Appropriations Act of September 7, 1888. ''Montgomery'' served during the Spanish–American War and in World War I and was named for Montgomery, Alabama. ''Montgomery'' was launched 5 December 1891 by Columbian Iron Works, Baltimore, Maryland; sponsored by Miss Sophia Smith; and commissioned at Norfolk Navy Yard 21 June 1894. Service history Assigned to the North Atlantic Squadron, the new cruiser operated along the eastern seaboard and in the Caribbean. During the Spanish–American War, she cruised near Cuba and Haiti in April 1898 and in May joined the blockade of Havana. She took two prizes, ''Lorenzo'' and ''Frasquito'', 5 May, and shelled the Spanish forts a week later.
