Annika Wendle
Annika Wendle (born 15 September 1997) is a German freestyle wrestler. She is a two-time bronze medalist at the European Wrestling Championships. She also won a silver medal at the 2020 Individual Wrestling World Cup held in Belgrade, Serbia. Career Wendle won the silver medal in the women's 53kg event at the 2018 World University Wrestling Championships held in Goiânia, Brazil. In 2019, Wendle competed in the 53kg event at the European Wrestling Championships held in Bucharest, Romania where she was eliminated in her first match by Jessica Blaszka of the Netherlands. Blaszka went on to win one of the bronze medals in that event. In that same year, Wendle also competed in the 55kg event at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan without winning a medal. Amateur wrestling is a variant of wrestling practiced in collegiate, school, or other amateur level competitions. There are two international wrestling styles performed in the Olympic Games: freestyle and Greco-Roman. Both styles are under the supervision of the United World Wrestling (UWW; formerly known as FILA, from the French acronym for International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles). A similar style, commonly called collegiate (also known as scholastic or folkstyle), is practiced in colleges and universities, secondary schools, middle schools, and among younger age groups in the United States. The 2021 World Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament was the last wrestling qualification tournament for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. The event was held from 6 to 9 May 2021, in Sofia, Bulgaria. Qualification summary A total of 36 athletes secured a spot in the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Tokyo, Japan. Two spots were given to each of the weight classes in every event. This allows a total of 12 available spots for each event. Every winner and runner-up per class were awarded their place for wrestling, at the 2020 Summer Olympics. The 2024 European Wrestling Championships was held from 12 to 18 February 2024 in Bucharest, Romania. At the 2024 European Championships, in accordance with sanctions imposed following by the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, wrestlers from Russia and Belarus were not permitted to use the name, flag, or anthem of Russia or Belarus.
