Annie Van Der Meer
Annie van der Steeg-Van der Meer (10 August 1928 — 30 May 2004) was a Dutch kortebaan speed skater, with her best results in the 1950s. During her career she won a total of 75 prizes. She became twice Frisian champion and won the silver medal at the national championships. Career She already did speed skating when she was young, but never competed in girls’ competitions. She started competing at the serious competitions. After a short while she started winning prizes. However, at a competition at IJsbrechtum she crashed. She rode against a rope she didn’t saw due to the mist. She had a concussion and couldn’t compete at other races that winter. She returned on the ice in the winter of 1948-49. She became the Frisian kortebaan champion in the winter of 1950-51 in Appingedam. She beat Aaltje Terpstra, a rider who won almost all competitions in Drenthe and Groningen. Surhuisterveen
Surhuisterveen ( fry, Surhústerfean) is the largest of the 12 villages of the municipality of Achtkarspelen, in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. As of 1 January 2017, Surhuisterveen had a population of 5,929. General information The village was first mentioned in 1603 as Surhustera feen. Surhuisterveen began to develop at the end of the 16th century as peat-excavators and boatmen built their homes in the area. The name Surhuisterveen refers to the time of the peat-colonies, and means "the peat-bogs of Surhuizum". The earliest settlers were mainly Mennonites. Surhuizum is another constituent village of Achtkarspelen, which is significantly smaller, but also significantly older than Surhuisterveen. Sneek (; fy, Snits) is a city southwest of Leeuwarden and the seat of the former municipality of Sneek in the province of Friesland, Netherlands. As of 2011 it is the seat of the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân (Southwest Friesland). The city had approximately 33,855 inhabitants in January 2017. Bolsward
Bolsward (, West Frisian: ''Boalsert'') is a city in Súdwest-Fryslân in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. Bolsward has a population of just under 10,200. It is located 10 km W.N.W. of Sneek. History The town is founded on three artificial dwelling mounds, the first of which was built some time before Christ. During the Middle Ages, Bolsward was a trade center and port city connected to the North Sea via the Middle Sea. This connection was lost when the Middle Sea was reclaimed to form arable land. After this, a canal was dug to the Zuiderzee. The town is first mentioned in AD 725. As a trading city, Bolsward was granted city rights by Philip the Good in 1455. Tjalhuizum
Tjalhuizum ( fry, Tsjalhuzum) is a small village in Súdwest-Fryslân in the province Friesland of the Netherlands. It had a population of around 25 in January 2017. History The village was first mentioned in the 13th century as Tyelahusum, and means "settlement of Tjalle". The church was demolished in 1817, however the tower has remained standing. Tjalhuizum was home to 51 people in 1840. In 1972, a high World War II monument has been placed in Tjalhuizum along the IJsbrechtum naar Nijland. The monument serves as a remembrance for the lost lives in the municipality of Wymbritseradiel. Annually on 4 May, the school children from IJsbrechtum and Nijland walk to the monument, observe two of minutes of silence at 20:00 followed by the signing of the Frisian anthem. Zutphen
Zutphen () is a city and municipality located in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands. It lies some 30 km northeast of Arnhem, on the eastern bank of the river Ijssel at the point where it is joined by the Berkel.
