Annie Stein
Annie Stein was a civil rights activist who focused on desegregating Washington, D.C. theaters, restaurants and department stores. Background Annie Steckler was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents were Ukrainian immigrants; her father's name was Philip Steckler, born in (1875–1925) in Romny, Ukraine. She had two sisters, Frieda and Sylvia. Annie Stein was no outsider to the hardships faced by the racially and economically oppressed. Stein grew up in the midst of poverty, witnessing first hand her own parents' struggle to feed and support her. She earned a scholarship to Hunter College. In the mid-1930s, while attending Hunter, Stein left her studies for Washington to defend the Scottsboro Boys, nine African-American boys falsely accused of raping two white women."Annie Stein Papers." David Rein
David Rein (1914–1979) was a 20th-Century American attorney who, with partner Joseph Forer, supported Progressive Era, Progressive causes including the legal defense of African-Americans and accused Communists. Rein and Foyer were members of the National Lawyers Guild and its District of Columbia, D.C. chapter. Rein represented "more than 100 people", alleged to have been Communists, before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and the subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Administration (chaired by U.S. Senator Joseph R. The Cold War is a term commonly used to refer to a period of geopolitical tension between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies, the Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc. The term '' cold war'' is used because there was no large-scale fighting directly between the two superpowers, but they each supported major regional conflicts known as proxy wars.
