Annie Oakley House
Annie Oakley House is a historic home located at Cambridge, Maryland, Cambridge, Dorchester County, Maryland. It is a -story, brick-and-frame, Colonial Revival–influenced bungalow constructed in 1913. Behind the house is a small garage and studio apartment. The house overlooks Hambrooks Bay, a protected body of water off the Choptank River. It was constructed as a retirement home for Annie Oakley and her husband, Frank E. Butler, Frank Butler, and is the only surviving property in the nation that was either owned or occupied by Oakley as her primary and permanent residence. It features built-in shelves originally intended to display shooting trophies. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. The Colonial Revival architectural style seeks to revive elements of American colonial architecture. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. Fairly small numbers of Colonial Revival homes were built c. 1880–1910, a period when Queen Anne-style architecture was dominant in the United States. A bungalow is a small house or cottage that is either single-story or has a second story built into a sloping roof (usually with dormer windows), and may be surrounded by wide verandas. Annie Oakley
Annie Oakley (born Phoebe Ann Mosey; August 13, 1860 – November 3, 1926) was an American sharpshooter who starred in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. Oakley developed hunting skills as a child to provide for her impoverished family in western Ohio. At age 15, she won a shooting contest against an experienced marksman, Frank E. Butler, whom she later married in 1876. The pair joined Buffalo Bill in 1885, performing in Europe before royalty and other heads of state. Audiences were astounded to see her shooting out a cigar from her husband's hand or splitting a playing-card edge-on at 30 paces. She earned more than anyone except Buffalo Bill himself. After a bad rail accident in 1901, she had to settle for a less taxing routine, and toured in a play written about her career. She also instructed women in marksmanship, believing strongly in female self-defense. Her stage acts were filmed for one of Thomas Edison's earliest Kinetoscopes in 1894.
