Frid is a Scandinavian (Norse) surname, derived from the name of the god Frey (Freyr) - same derivation as the day of the week (Tuesday -Tws Norse god of the sea, Wednesday -Wodin/Odin father of the gods, Thursday - Thor's day and Fri day - Freyr) (Names of the days of the week). Princess Anni-Frid Synni Reuss, Countess of Plauen (born Anni-Frid Synni Lyngstad on 15 November 1945), also known by her nickname "Frida", is a Norwegian-born Swedish singer, songwriter and environmentalist, who is best known as one of the founding members and lead singers of the Swedish pop band ABBA. Born in Bjørkåsen (Ballangen), Norway, to a Norwegian mother and a German father, she grew up in Torshälla, Sweden, and started her first solo career there, as a jazz singer in 1967, through a talent competition called ''New Faces''. She won the competition with her song, "'' En ledig dag''", leading to a television appearance on ''Hylands Hörna'' on Dagen H; as a result, she was signed by EMI, and in turn was signed by Stig Anderson's record label, Polar Music, after years of releasing several singles and an album, ''Frida'' under the earlier record label. ''Anni-Frid Lyngstad'' is the eponymous compilation album by Anni-Frid Lyngstad, released by Emidisc in 1971, after Lyngstad ended her 5-year contract with EMI's Swedish division. All songs on this album are included in the EMI compilation album '' Frida 1967-1972''. Background Overview The same year in 1971 that Lyngstad had had her first Svensktoppen number one, "Min Egen Stad", a Swedish language version of the Hep Stars track "It's Nice To Be Back Again", she did not renew her contract with EMI, and was signed to Polar Music to record her first single with the latter independent label. The expiration allowed EMI to release the compilation album, ''Anni-Frid Lyngstad'', under EMI's budget label, Emidisc.
