Anne Elder
Anne Elder (4 January 1918 – 23 October 1976) was an Australian ballet dancer and poet. Career Inspired by Anna Pavlova, she commenced ballet lessons with Laurel Martyn in the 1930s, and went on to have an impressive career dancing with Colonel de Basil's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, the Australian Ballet Company, and the Borovansky Ballet Company for whom she was a soloist (1940–1944). Elder was troubled by illness throughout her life, and perhaps as a result, "turned her creative energies to painting, poetry-writing, gardening and her house, which she filled with light and beauty". In the mid-1960s, encouraged by Bruce Dawe and Philip Martin she began to publish poetry regularly in newspapers and periodicals, including the ''Australian'', ''Meanjin'', ''Quadrant'', ''Overland'' and ''Southern Review''. Anna Pavlova
Anna Pavlovna Pavlova ( , rus, Анна Павловна Павлова ), born Anna Matveyevna Pavlova ( rus, Анна Матвеевна Павлова; – 23 January 1931), was a Russian prima ballerina of the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. She was a principal artist of the Imperial Russian Ballet and the Ballets Russes of Sergei Diaghilev. Pavlova is most recognized for her creation of the role of ''The Dying Swan'' and, with her own company, became the first ballerina to tour around the world, including performances in South America, India and Australia. Philip Martin (poet)
Philip John Talbot Martin (1931–2005) was an Australian academic, poet, translator, critic and broadcaster. Born in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond, Martin graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1958. He taught English at Monash University from 1964. His poems have been published, anthologised and broadcast both in Australia and overseas. His poetic output was cut short when he suffered a severe stroke in 1987. He lived through a long period of illness from that time until his death in 2005. The Anne Elder Trust Fund Award for poetry was administered by the Victorian branch of the Fellowship of Australian Writers from its establishment in 1976 until 2017. From 2018 the award has been administered by Australian Poetry. It is awarded annually, as the Anne Elder Award, for the best first book of poetry published in Australia.
