The Maine House of Representatives is the lower house of the Maine Legislature. The House consists of 151 voting members and three nonvoting members. The voting members represent an equal number of districts across the state and are elected via plurality voting. The nonvoting members represent three of Maine's Native American tribes, though two tribes have declined to send representatives. Each voting member of the House represents around 9,000 citizens of the state. Because it is a part-time position, members of the Maine House of Representatives usually have outside employment as well. Members are limited to four consecutive terms of two years each, but may run again after two years. The House meets at the Maine State House in Augusta. John Tuttle (politician)
John Lawrence Tuttle Jr. (February 24, 1951 – January 28, 2022) was an American politician from Maine. Tuttle served as a Democratic State Senator from Maine's 3rd District, representing part of York County including his residence of Sanford. He was first elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1978, serving until 1984 when he successfully sought to represent Sanford and the surrounding towns in the State Senate. He served in the State Senate until 1988. He returned to the House in 1994 serving through 2002. He served again the House from 2004 to 2012. He was unable to run for re-election due to term limits in 2002 and 2012. In 2012, He successfully ran for the State Senate to replace Republican Jonathan Courtney, who ran for U.S. Congress. The Maine Democratic Party is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the U.S. state of Maine. After the Civil War, Democrats were a minor player in a political scene dominated by the Republican Party. However, during the 1950s, Edmund Muskie led an expansive political insurgency culminating in his election as Governor of Maine and successive Democratic elections to both state and national offices. Sanford is a city in York County, Maine, United States. The population was 21,982 in the 2020 census, making it the seventh largest municipality in the state. Situated on the Mousam River, Sanford includes the village of Springvale. The city features many lakes in wooded areas which attract campers. Sanford is part of the Portland– South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area.
