Annals Of Philosophy
''Annals of Philosophy; or, Magazine of Chemistry, Mineralology, Mechanics, Natural History, Agriculture and the Arts'' was a learned journal founded in 1813 by the Scottish chemist Thomas Thomson. It shortly became a leader in its field of commercial scientific periodicals. Contributors included John George Children, Edward Daniel Clarke, Philip Crampton, Alexander Crichton, James Cumming, John Herapath, William George Horner, Thomas Dick Lauder, John Miers, Matthew Paul Moyle, Robert Porrett, James Thomson, and Charles Wheatstone. Thomson edited it until 1821, when he was succeeded in 1821 by Richard Phillips. The journal was bought by Richard Taylor in 1827, and closed down for the benefit of the ''Philosophical Magazine''. The ''Annals of Philosophy'' were issued monthly following a standard pattern. Often the first article was a biographical article (10 pages) on a living or recently deceased scientist. Thomas Dick Lauder
Sir Thomas Dick Lauder of Fountainhall, 7th Baronet, FRSE FSA(Scot) LLD (13 August 178429 May 1848) was a Scottish author. He served as Secretary to the Board of Manufactures (1839–), on the Herring Fisheries Board, at the Royal Institution for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts, and as Deputy Lieutenant of both counties of Moray and Haddington. He was the only son of Sir Andrew Dick-Lauder, 6th Baronet, whom he succeeded in 1820. Early life Lauder was born in Edinburgh on13 August 1784, the son of Elizabeth (née Brown) and Sir Andrew Lauder, 6th Baronet of Fountainhall. Meteorology is a branch of the atmospheric sciences (which include atmospheric chemistry and physics) with a major focus on weather forecasting. The study of meteorology dates back millennia, though significant progress in meteorology did not begin until the 18th century. The 19th century saw modest progress in the field after weather observation networks were formed across broad regions. Prior attempts at prediction of weather depended on historical data. The ''Philosophical Magazine'' is one of the oldest scientific journals published in English. Richard Taylor (editor)
Richard Taylor (18 May 1781 – 1 December 1858) was an English naturalist and publisher of scientific journals. He became joint editor of the ''Philosophical Magazine'' in 1822 and went on to publish the '' Annals of Natural History'' in 1838. From 1837 to 1852, he edited and published ''Scientific Memoirs, Selected from the Transactions of Foreign Academies of Science''. In 1852, he was joined by the chemist Dr William Francis to form Taylor and Francis. Life Richard Taylor was born at Norwich on 18 May 1781, the second son of John Taylor. Richard Phillips FRS FRSE FCS FGS (21 November 1778 – 11 May 1851), was a distinguished British chemist and became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1822. Early life Born in Lombard Street, London on 21 November 1778, he was the son of James Phillips (1745–1799), a printer and bookseller and his wife, Mary. Charles Wheatstone
Sir Charles Wheatstone FRS FRSE DCL LLD (6 February 1802 – 19 October 1875), was an English scientist and inventor of many scientific breakthroughs of the Victorian era, including the English concertina, the stereoscope (a device for displaying three-dimensional images), and the Playfair cipher (an encryption technique). However, Wheatstone is best known for his contributions in the development of the Wheatstone bridge, originally invented by Samuel Hunter Christie, which is used to measure an unknown electrical resistance, and as a major figure in the development of telegraphy. James Thomson (minister)
James Thomson (9 May 1768–28 November 1855) was a Scottish minister and editor of the ''Encyclopædia Britannica''. Life Born on 9 May 1768 at Crieff in Perthshire, was the second son of Elizabeth Ewan and her husband, John Thomson. Thomas Thomson was his younger brother. He was educated at the parish school, and afterwards studied at the University of Edinburgh. He was licensed to preach by the presbytery of Haddington on 6 August 1793, and frequently assisted his uncle, John Ewan, minister of Whittingham, East Lothian. On 26 August 1805 Thomson was ordained minister of Eccles, Berwickshire. In 1842 he received the honorary degree of DD from the University of St Andrews, and in 1847 he resigned his charge and retired to Edinburgh. Robert Porrett
Robert Porrett (1783–1868) was an English amateur chemist and antiquary. Life The son of Robert Porrett, ordnance storekeeper at the Tower of London, he was born in London on 22 September 1783. He began work in his father's department as an assistant. He was appointed in 1795, promoted later to be chief of his department, and retired on a pension in 1850, when his services received official acknowledgment. He died on 25 November 1868, unmarried. Matthew Paul Moyle
Matthew Paul Moyle (4 October 1788 – 7 August 1880) was an English meteorologist and writer on mining, second son of John Moyle, by Julia, daughter of Jonathan Hornblower, was born at Chacewater, Cornwall, 4 October 1788, and educated at Guy's and St. Thomas's Hospitals. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1809, and was afterwards in practice at Helston in Cornwall for the long period of sixty-nine years. A considerable portion of his practice consisted in attending the men accidentally injured in the tin and copper mines of his neighbourhood, and his attention was thus led to mining.
