Anna Lucasta (1949 Film)
''Anna Lucasta'' is a 1949 American film noir drama film directed by Irving Rapper and starring Paulette Goddard, William Bishop, John Ireland, Oscar Homolka, and Broderick Crawford. Plot When the Lucasta family in Pennsylvania receives a message that a friend's son Rudolf is coming to town to find a wife, they see a chance to make some money. The friend of the family, Mr. Strobel, will send $4,000 to accompany Rudolf. The family decides on trying to "sell" one of their own daughters, Anna, to Rudolf. The only one opposed to the idea is her alcoholic father, Joe. His daughter Stella's husband Frank (Anna's brother-in-law) persuades Joe to agree by beating him. Anna, considered a black sheep of the family, living in Brooklyn and working in a bar called Noah's Ark for a living. Will Geer (born William Aughe Ghere; March 9, 1902 – April 22, 1978) was an American actor, musician, and social activist, who was active in labor organizing and other movements in New York and Southern California in the 1930s and 1940s. In California he befriended rising singer Woody Guthrie. They both lived in New York for a time in the 1940s. He was blacklisted in the 1950s by Hollywood after refusing, in testimony before Congress, to name persons who had joined the Communist Party. Susan Hayward (born Edythe Marrenner; June 30, 1917 – March 14, 1975) was an American film actress, best known for her film portrayals of women that were based on true stories. After working as a fashion model for the Walter Thornton Model Agency, Hayward traveled to Hollywood in 1937 to audition for the role of Scarlett O'Hara. She secured a film contract and played several small supporting roles over the next few years. Anthony Caruso (April 7, 1916 – April 4, 2003) was an American character actor in more than one hundred American films, usually playing villains and gangsters, including the first season of Walt Disney's ''Zorro'' as Captain Juan Ortega. Life and career Caruso was born in Frankfort, Indiana, While acting at the Pasadena Playhouse, he met Alan Ladd, beginning a friendship that continued as they made 11 films together. Caruso's early acting experience included performing with The Hart Players, a stock theater company that presented tent shows. Lisa Golm ( Luise Schmertzler; 10 April 1891 – 6 January 1964) was a German actress who emigrated to America and appeared in a number of Hollywood films as a character actress. Golm made her first screen appearance in the 1939 film ''Confessions of a Nazi Spy''. She also featured on American television, appearing on shows such as ''Alfred Hitchcock Presents'', ''The Third Man'' and ''The Twilight Zone''. Biography On 6 November 1918, she married Ernest Otto Ferdinand Golm in Berlin, Germany and later entered the United States at New York City on 3 December 1937. She was naturalized as an American citizen on 24 September 1943, when a resident of Los Angeles. Death Golm died on 6 January 1964, aged 72, in Tel Aviv, Israel from a neoplasm (or tumour). She was buried in the Haifa Cemetery in Israel. She was survived by her sister, Jennie Schmerzler.
