Anna C. Gilbert
Anna Catherine Gilbert (born 1972) is an American mathematician who works as the Herman Goldstine Collegiate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan. She also holds a courtesy appointment in electrical engineering and computer science at Michigan. Her research expertise is in randomized algorithms for harmonic analysis, image processing, signal processing, and large data sets.. Education and career Gilbert earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago in 1993, and completed her Ph.D. in 1997 from Princeton University under the supervision of Ingrid Daubechies. After postdoctoral research at Yale University, she joined AT&T Labs, and continued there as a staff member until 2004, when she moved to Michigan. Matching Pursuit
Matching pursuit (MP) is a sparse approximation algorithm which finds the "best matching" projections of multidimensional data onto the span of an over-complete (i.e., redundant) dictionary D. The basic idea is to approximately represent a signal f from Hilbert space H as a weighted sum of finitely many functions g_ (called atoms) taken from D. An approximation with N atoms has the form : f(t) \approx \hat f_N(t) := \sum_^ a_n g_(t) where g_ is the \gamma_nth column of the matrix D and a_n is the scalar weighting factor (amplitude) for the atom g_. Normally, not every atom in D will be used in this sum. Instead, matching pursuit chooses the atoms one at a time in order to maximally (greedily) reduce the approximation error. Joint Mathematics Meetings
The Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) is a mathematics conference hosted annually in early January by the American Mathematical Society (AMS). Frequently, several other national mathematics organizations also participate. The meeting is the largest gathering of mathematicians in the United States, and the largest annual meeting of mathematicians in the world. For example, more than 6000 people attended the 2017 JMM. Several thousand talks, panels, minicourses, and poster sessions are held each year. The JMM also hosts an ''Employment Center'', which is a focal point for the hiring process of academic mathematicians, especially for liberal arts colleges. Many employers conduct their preliminary interview process at the meeting. Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) is a professional society dedicated to applied mathematics, computational science, and data science through research, publications, and community.
