The Angra do Heroísmo City Hall ( pt, Paços do Concelho de Angra do Heroísmo) is a medieval structure constructed to house the municipal council/authority, situated in the Freguesia (Portugal), civil parish of Sé (Angra do Heroísmo), Sé, Concelho, municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, on the Portugal, Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. History The first organized municipal meeting occurred in 1474; called by João Vaz Corte Real, the first Senate of Angra occurred on the site of the current building. In 1534, the town was elevated to the status of city. The first representation of the municipal seat appeared in 1589, showing a small square, in a letter by Jan Huygen van Linschoten. At that time, a small bystreet existed behind the building, connecting the ''Rua do Galo'' to the ''Ladeira de São Francisco''. In 1608, an earthquake caused damage many of the buildings in the city. Angra do Heroísmo (), or simply Angra, is a city and municipality on Terceira Island, Portugal, and one of the three capital cities of the Azores. Founded in 1478, Angra was historically the most important city in the Azores, as seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Angra, Bishop of the Azores, government entities, and having previously served as the capital city of Portugal during the Liberal Wars. The population in 2011 was 35,402, in an area of 239.00 km². It was classified as a World Heritage Site, World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1983.
