Angliss Hospital
Angliss Hospital is a public hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia, located on the corner of Albert Street and Talaskia Road. The hospital is a member of the Eastern Health network, and is located near a number of medical facilities that support the hospital, such as Angliss House and Chandler House. History The hospital was originally named William Angliss Hospital and then changed to Angliss Hospital. It was established in 1939 and named after Sir William Charles Angliss, a respected local politician and philanthropist who contributed financially to the hospital's foundation. The Angliss family continued to play a significant role in the hospitals growth and management, well into the 20th Century. In 1945 a decision was made to relocate the hospital due to increased demand, and in 1958, Lady Angliss opened the hospital in its now present location. William Charles Angliss
Sir William Charles Angliss (29 January 1865 – 15 June 1957) was a butcher, pastoralist, pioneering meat exporter, businessman, and politician in Melbourne, Australia. Biography He was the eldest son of William Angliss, tailor, and his wife Eliza Fiddian, born in Dudley, Worcestershire, England. He was educated at Hawkhurst, Kent, and learnt the butcher's trade as a youth, working first with an uncle in London before migrating to New York. After two and a half years in North America, he migrated to Rockhampton, Queensland in 1884. After working for a time in Brisbane and Sydney, he moved to Melbourne in 1886, where he set up a butchers shop in North Carlton. He opened larger premises in Bourke Street, Melbourne in 1892, and started exporting frozen meat, becoming a pioneer of meat refrigeration. Dame Jacobena Victoria Alice Angliss, DBE ( Grutzner; 23 May 1896 – 10 November 1980), known as Bena Angliss, was an Australian philanthropist, arts supporter, and community worker. Biography She was born in Epping, Victoria as Jacobena Victoria Alice Grutzner, daughter of Jacob and Frances (née Ladhams) Grutzner. Jacobena Grutzner married butcher and meat exporter William Charles Angliss (1865–1957) at St. Columb's Church, Hawthorn, Victoria on 31 March 1919; they had one child, a daughter, Eirene Rose. Jacobena Angliss's husband, William (who was knighted in 1939), was a member of the Legislative Council of Victoria from 1912 to 1952, had wide experience in industry management and accumulated great wealth through the establishment of a number of pastoral companies.
