Peter Stuart (bishop)
Peter Derrick James Stuart (born 1963) is a British-born Anglican bishop in the Anglican Church of Australia. He has served as the bishop of the Diocese of Newcastle since 2 February 2018. He previously served as an assistant bishop in the diocese from 2009 to 2018. Following the retirement of Brian Farran on 15 December 2012, until the installation Bishop Greg Thompson on 2 February 2014, Stuart administered the diocese. He resumed administration of the diocese on 1 December 2016 prior to Thompson's resignation as bishop on 31 May 2017 due to bullying. He was elected as the Bishop of Newcastle by the diocesan synod on 25 November 2017 and was installed on 2 February 2018. Stuart was born in England in 1963, emigrating to Australia in 1971. Roger Herft
Roger Adrian Herft (born 11 July 1948) is a former bishop in the Anglican Church of Australia. He was the Archbishop of Perth from 2005 to 2017. He was previously the Bishop of Newcastle from 1993 to 2005 and the Bishop of Waikato in New Zealand from 1986. Herft was removed from Holy Orders in February 2022, after the Episcopal Standards Board of the Anglican Church of Australia determined in December 2021 that Herft had failed to address child sex abuse claims made against priests under his control during his time as Bishop of Newcastle. An assistant bishop in the Anglican Communion is a bishop appointed to assist a diocesan bishop. Church of England In the established Church of England, assistant bishops are usually retired (diocesan or suffragan) bishops – in which case they are ''honorary assistant bishop''s. Historically, non-retired bishops have been appointed to be assistant bishops – however, unlike a diocesan or suffragan they do not hold a see: they are not the "Bishop of Somewhere". Some honorary assistant bishops are bishops who have resigned their see and returned to a priestly ministry (vicar, rector, canon, archdeacon, dean etc.) in an English diocese. Alfred Holland (bishop)
Alfred Charles Holland (23 February 1927 – 8 October 2018) was an Australian Anglican bishop. He was consecrated as a bishop on 6 August 1972 and was an assistant bishop in the Diocese of Perth before becoming the diocesan Bishop of Newcastle in New South Wales from 1978 to 1992. Life and ministry Holland was educated at St Chad's College, Durham and ordained at St Paul's Cathedral, London, in 1953. After a curacy in Hackney in London he became the parish priest at Scarborough, Western Australia, from 1954. While in Scarborough he was responsible for the building of St Columba's Church in Northstead Street, Scarborough. He was later the archdeacon of Stirling before his ordination to the episcopate. Ian Shevill
Ian Wotton Allnutt Shevill AO (11 May 19173 November 1988) was an Australian Anglican bishop. Early life and education Ian Shevill was educated at Scots College, Sydney, and Sydney University, then at Moore Theological College and the Australian College of Theology. Ordained ministry Shevill was ordained in 1941 and his first position was as a curate of St Paul's, Burwood. From 1948 to 1953 he worked for the Society for the Propagation of Gospel (USPG). In 1953, he was ordained to the episcopate as Bishop of North Queensland, a post he held for 17 years. He was enthroned on 23 April 1953 at St James' Cathedral, Townsville. Shevill was nicknamed "the boy bishop" as he was only 34 when he became Bishop of North Queensland, then the world's youngest Anglican bishop. James Housden
James Alan George Housden (16 September 1904 – 22 April 1994) was the fifth Anglican Bishop of Rockhampton in Queensland, Australia, serving from 1947 to 1958. In 1958 he then became the Bishop of Newcastle in New South Wales until 1972. Housden was born in Birmingham and educated at Essendon High School and the University of Queensland before being ordained in 1929. His first position was as a curate at St Paul's Ipswich, Queensland after which he was chaplain of the Mitchell River Mission. He then became rector of Darwin, Northern Territory then vicar of Coolangatta. From 1940 to 1946 he was the Rural Dean of Warwick and finally (before his ordination to the episcopate) vicar of Christ Church, South Yarra. St John's Cathedral (Brisbane)
St John's Cathedral is the cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane and the metropolitan cathedral of the ecclesiastical province of Queensland, Australia. It is dedicated to St John the Evangelist. De Witt Batty
Francis de Witt Batty (known as De Witt; 10 January 1879 – 3 April 1961) was the 7th Anglican Bishop of Newcastle in Australia from 1931 until his retirement in 1958. Early life De Witt Batty was born in 1879, the son of the Rev William Edmund Batty and his wife Frances Beatrice, née Jebb. He was named after his mother's ancestor, the Dutch patriot Johan de Witt. He was educated at St Paul's School, London and Balliol College, Oxford Clerical career Batty trained for ordination at Wells Theological College, and was ordained deacon in 1903 and priest in 1904.
