Angels of Flight Canada is a Canadian owned and operated air and ground ambulance service based in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. It transports patients to and from 104 different countries. History Angels of Flight Canada was established in 1988 by Gail Courneyea, a critical care registered nurse at the Peterborough Civic Hospital for 16 years. In 1986, Courneyea was asked to accompany a patient on an air ambulance. She felt very uncomfortable during the 20-minute flight as she was working in a foreign environment and had a fear of flying. Determined to overcome her fears, Courneyea received a certificate in aeromedical care and her private pilot's licence in the United States in 1987. She founded Angels of Flight Canada Inc. in 1988 since provincial health insurance does not cover travel outside a province, and no employment as a flight nurse existed in Canada at the time. Air medical services is a comprehensive term covering the use of air transportation, aeroplane or helicopter, to move patients to and from healthcare facilities and accident scenes. Personnel provide comprehensive prehospital and emergency and critical care to all types of patients during aeromedical evacuation or rescue operations aboard helicopter and propeller aircraft or jet aircraft. The use of air transport to provide medical evacuation on the battlefield dates to World War I, but its role was expanded dramatically during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Leukemia ( also spelled leukaemia and pronounced ) is a group of blood cancers that usually begin in the bone marrow and result in high numbers of abnormal blood cells. Aeromedical Evacuation
Aeromedical evacuation (AE) usually refers to the use of military transport aircraft to carry wounded personnel. The first recorded British ambulance flight took place in 1917 in the Sinai peninsula some 30 miles south of El Arish when a Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c flew out a soldier in the Imperial Camel Corps who had been shot in the ankle during the raid on Bir el Hassana. The flight took 45 minutes; the same journey by land would have taken some 3 days. In the 1920s several aeromedical services, both official and unofficial, started up in various parts of the world. Aircraft were still primitive at the time, with limited capabilities, and the efforts received mixed reviews. Development of the idea continued.
