George Marlow
George Marlow (24 September 1876 – 21 May 1939) (born Joseph Marks) was an Australian theatrical entrepreneur born in London of Jewish extraction, noted for bringing melodrama and pantomime to Sydney audiences in the early 1900s. His name has been frequently mis-spelled as "George Marlowe". History Marlow was born Joseph Lewis Marks (or Marx) to Morris Marks (1834 – 21 January 1920) and his wife Celia Marks, née Jones, (1835 – 29 December 1898). Among his siblings were A. Adolph Marks (c. 1871 – 22 May 1956), who would establish A. A. Marks Ltd., wholesale tobacconists, and Alfred Isaac Marks (c. 1873 – 21 August 1947), later business manager for George Marlow Dramatic Company and treasurer of several of Marlow's theatres, and married actress Miss Elwyn Harvey on 24 December 1913. ''The Referee'' was a newspaper published in Sydney, Australia from 1886 to 1939. History ''The Referee'' was first published on 20 October 1886 as ''The Sydney Referee'' by Edward Lewis. In 1933 it absorbed '' The Arrow''. It ceased on 31 August 1939. In 1887 Nat Gould started work as "Verax", horse-racing editor for the paper, which published in serial form his first novel, ''With the Tide'', followed by his next five. Bert Ive (1875–1939) was a British-born Australian cinematographer, who was the first long-term cinematographer and still photographer in Australia. During his career as a film photographer for the federal government from 1913 to 1939, he frequently travelled across Australia to photograph the country's landscapes, industries, people and famous events. His motion pictures and still photos were used to promote Australia to the rest of the world. Early life Ive was born in Reading, Berkshire, England in 1875 and became interested in cameras and photography in childhood. When he was 11, his family moved to Brisbane, where he began his career in cinematography. After dropping out of school at the age of 13, Bert Ive worked in several jobs, among them: glass embosser, logo writer, decorator and painter. A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience. ''Driving a Girl to Destruction'' is an Australian film directed by George Marlow. It is considered a lost film. Plot of original play The evil Lucas List has seduced Ruth Wright, and desires her cousin, conservative school teacher Ruby Wright, but she is engaged to Robert Ray, a lieutenant in the merchant marine. List arranges it so that Ray gets drunk and is persuaded to marry Ruth, who refuses to break it off with List. Ruby visits List's house at night to get her cousin away and is found there by Robert Ray. Ruby saves her cousin at the expense of her own reputation and winds up sacked from her teaching job. She inadvertently takes shelter with Madame de Meral, the owner of a brothel who works for List, but manages to escape.
