Andy Scherrer
Andy Scherrer (10 October 1946 – 26 November 2019) was a Swiss musician who played piano and saxophone. Biography Scherrer was born in 1946 in Brunnadern. At the age of 15, Scherrer taught himself how to play saxophone. He was educated at the City of Basel Music Academy, and taught at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern from 1975 to 2011. He was a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra and The George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band. In addition to the saxophone, he also played piano. City Of Basel Music Academy
The City of Basel Music Academy (german: Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel) is an institution for music education, located in Basel, Switzerland. It comprises a music school, college of music, and a center for early music research and performance. History The origins of the City of Basel Music Academy go back to 8 December 1867, when philanthropist Johann Jakob Schäublin-Vögtlin founded a music school (''Allgemeine Musikschule'') in Basel with support from the Gesellschaft für das Gute und Gemeinnützige (GGG). Swiss Jazz School in Bern is the first autonomous jazz school in Europe, which offers continuously jazz lessons. The school was founded in 1967. Vienna Art Orchestra
The Vienna Art Orchestra was a European jazz group based in Vienna, Austria. Organized at different times as either a big band or as a smaller combo, it was regarded as one of the leading European jazz ensembles and was an official cultural ambassador of the Republic of Austria. History Founded in 1977 by director and composer Mathias Rüegg, the band started out by performing Rüegg's postmodern compositions on stages throughout Europe. Among the founding musicians were singer Lauren Newton, saxophonists Wolfgang Puschnig and Harry Sokal, trombone player Christian Radovan, tuba player Jon Sass, and mallet percussionist Woody Schabata. George Gruntz
George Gruntz (24 June 1932 – 10 January 2013) was a Swiss jazz pianist, organist, harpsichordist, keyboardist, and composer known for the George Gruntz Concert Big Band and his work with Phil Woods, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Don Cherry, Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, and Mel Lewis. Gruntz, who was born in Basel, Switzerland, was also an accomplished arranger and composer, having been commissioned by many orchestras and symphonies. From 1972 to 1994, he served as artistic director of JazzFest Berlin. He died at the age of 80 in January 2013.
