André Parrot
André Charles Ulrich Parrot (15 February 1901 – 24 August 1980) was a French archaeologist specializing in the ancient Near East. He led excavations in Lebanon, Iraq and Syria, and is best known for his work at Mari, Syria, where he led important excavations from 1933 to 1975. Biography Parrot was born in 1901 in Désandans in the French department of Doubs. He was appointed chief curator of the National Museums in 1946, and became director of the Louvre from 1958 to 1962. He was a Commander of the Legion of Honour and a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. He married his second wife Marie-Louise Girod in 1960, and died in Paris in 1980. One of his students at the École du Louvre was Denise Cocquerillat. Marguerite Rutten
Marguerite Rutten (18 October 1898, Paris - 07 April 1984, Nice) was a French archaeologist and Assyriologist. Biography “Maggie” Rutten, of Dutch ancestry, studied first at the Institut Catholique de Paris (diplome 1930). Then she spent her entire career at the Louvre, first as a chargé de mission in the Department of Oriental Antiquities. She graduated from the École du Louvre in 1933. She then became an attaché and in 1934 published a ''Guide to Oriental Antiquities in the Louvre Museum.'' She was one of the main actors of Charles Fossey's conference at the École pratique des hautes études and obtained the title of graduate student with a work under his direction (''Contracts from the Seleucid period in the Louvre Museum''). This book attracted the attention of André Aymard, “who thanked Miss Rutten for having accompanied her copies with translations and transcriptions, thus allowing Hellenists to have access to this documentation”. Denise Cocquerillat (8 June 1918, Granville - 18 December 1999, Paris) was a French archaeologist and Assyriologist, specialist in cuneiform texts. Biography She studied at the École du Louvre and passed a thesis (“The Mace in Mesopotamian Iconography”) on 22 December 1947 with Georges Contenau and André Parrot as members of the jury. She also studied ancient languages, such as Hebrew, Assyrian-Babylonian and Sumerian. She then devoted herself to the translation of cuneiform texts and became director of research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research. Denise Cocquerillat has dealt with about 10% of the 1500 published Neo-Babylonian tablets from Uruk and the legal texts of Babylon dating from the second millennium BC The 2nd millennium BC spanned the years 2000 BC to 1001 BC.
