Andrew Williamson (judge)
Andrew Williamson was the Deputy Deemster of the Isle of Man. Andrew Williamson was born in Douglas in December 1946 and brought up in Kirk Michael. He was educated at Michael School and then his local Secondary school, Ramsey Grammar School, before leaving the island to study law at Nottingham Regional College of Technology. He then joined the Middle Temple and was subsequently called to the bar. After being called to the bar, he practiced in and around London and became deputy clerk to the justices in inner London for two years before becoming clerk to the justices in Ashford, Kent. He then returned home and was appointed Deputy High Bailiff. He went on to become High Bailiff and an Acting Deemster for 6 years before become Deputy Deemster, specializing in family law, landlord and tenant and contract cases. He retired on 6 January 2008. Deemster
A Deemster () is a judge in the Isle of Man. The High Court of Justice of the Isle of Man is presided over by a deemster or, in the case of the appeal division of that court, a deemster and the Judge of Appeal. The deemsters also promulgate the Laws on Tynwald Day by reading out brief summaries of them in English and Manx. In the past, the First and Second Deemsters had ex officio seats in the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man. The Second Deemster was removed from the council in 1965 and the First Deemster in 1975. There are currently (2017) three full-time Deemsters. These are the First Deemster and Clerk of the Rolls (who is also the Deputy Governor), the Second Deemster, and an additional full-time Deemster. The offices of First Deemster, Second Deemster and Clerk of the Rolls are ancient offices. The High Bailiff () is a legal position held within the Isle of Man. The High Bailiff is the head stipendiary magistrate. The current High Bailiff is Her Worship Jayne Hughes, who took office on 11 March 2019. The High Bailiff and their deputy are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor. The High Bailiff and Deputy High Bailiff are ''ex officio'' judicial officers of the High Court of Justice of the Isle of Man and coroners of inquests. Originally there was a High Bailiff of each of the four towns of the island: Castletown, Ramsey, Peel and Douglas.
