Andrew Stuart (1725–1801)
Andrew Stuart (died 1801) was a Scottish lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1774 and 1801. Stuart was the second son of Archibald Stuart of Torrance in Lanarkshire (died 1767), seventh son and heir of Alexander Stuart of Torrance. His mother, Elizabeth, was daughter of Sir Andrew Myreton of Gogar, bart. He studied law at Edinburgh, and became a member of the Scottish bar. He was employed by James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton, as tutor to his children, and through his influence was in 1770 appointed Keeper of the Signet of Scotland. Stuart was involved in the Douglas Cause in which the Duke of Hamilton disputed the identity of Archibald James Edward Douglas, first baron Douglas, and endeavoured to hinder his succession to the family estates. Stuart was engaged to conduct the case against the claimant. Andrew Stuart (Canadian Politician)
Andrew Stuart (November 25, 1785 – February 21, 1840) was a lawyer and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born at Cataraqui in 1785, the son of the Anglican priest John Stuart, a United Empire Loyalist, and studied with the Reverend John Strachan and then at Union College in New York City. He studied law in Lower Canada, was admitted to the bar in 1807 and set up practice at Quebec City. He defended Pierre-Stanislas Bédard, who had been arrested for his involvement with the newspaper ''Le Canadien''. Henry Black practiced with Stuart as a partner. Stuart was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for the Lower Town of Quebec in 1814 and reelected in 1816; he supported the parti canadien at that time. He was elected to represent the Upper Town of Quebec in April 1820 and continued to represent that riding until his defeat in 1834. Andrew Stuart (August 3, 1823 – April 30, 1872) was a U.S. Representative from Ohio. Born near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Stuart moved to Pittsburgh with his mother in 1834. He received limited schooling. He worked in a newspaper office. He moved to Steubenville, Ohio, in 1850, where he was editor of the American Union 1850-1857. Stuart was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress (March 4, 1853 – March 3, 1855). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection. He engaged in the shipping business on the Gulf of Mexico and in the transportation of mails and supplies from Leavenworth, Kansas, to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Andrew Stuart (seigneur)
Sir Andrew Stuart, (June 16, 1812 – June 9, 1891) was a Quebec lawyer, judge, seigneur and businessman. He was born at Quebec City in 1812, the son of Andrew Stuart, and studied at Edward Parkin's school at Chambly. He articled with his uncle Sir James Stuart 1st., Bt. and then with Henry Black, was called to the bar in 1834 and set up practice at Quebec City. In 1842, he married Charlotte-Elmire, the daughter of seigneur Philippe-Joseph Aubert de Gaspé. He purchased the seigneury of La Martinière in 1846. In 1851, with a partner, he purchased the Saint-Maurice ironworks from his brother Henry; six or seven years later, they abandoned the operation which were taken over by John McDougall in 1862. Stuart was named Queen's Counsel in 1854. In 1859, he was named assistant judge in the Superior Court of Lower Canada and, in 1860, puisne judge for the same court. Andrew Stewart, 1st Baron Castle Stuart (1560–1629) was a Scottish nobleman, soldier, courtier to King James VI and I and one of the chief undertakers in the Ulster Plantation. Biography Described as 'a nobleman of impeccable background and proven military ability', he was the only son and heir of Andrew Stewart (d.1578), Master of Ochiltree, and Margaret, daughter of his first cousin Henry Stewart, 2nd Lord Methven of Methven Castle. He was the grandson of Andrew Stewart, 2nd Lord Ochiltree, whose title he succeeded to after his father predeceased his grandfather.
