Andrew Ross (businessman)
Andrew Ross (1857 – December 29, 1941) was a Canadian businessperson closely associated with the city of Hamilton, Ontario. Ross founded a carriage and wagon factory in 1888 that expanded several times in the years that followed, occupying, by 1912, numbers 281 through 288 on King Street East. With the advent of the motor vehicle, Ross branched into trucks, supplying the Canadian, Dominion and American Express Companies with trucks and wagons by 1910, as well as providing many Hamilton businesses with delivery vehicles. His company also built the Tivoli Theatre and the Barton Street Arena, and he was involved in professional ice hockey ( Hamilton Tigers of the NHL) and softball. In 1905, the Scoundrel softball team became world champions under his management. Ross is buried in Hamilton Cemetery. Hamilton is a port city in the Canadian province of Ontario. Hamilton has a population of 569,353, and its census metropolitan area, which includes Burlington and Grimsby, has a population of 785,184. Barton Street Arena
Barton Street Arena, also known as the Hamilton Forum, was the main sports arena located in Hamilton, Ontario, on Barton Street between Sanford Street and Wentworth Street. It was built in 1910 at what was at that time the east end of the city by Andrew Ross (original owner) who was a local Hamilton businessman. Originally, the arena had a seating capacity of 4,500 and standing room for roughly 500 people. By 1977 it had a seating capacity of 2800 people. It was torn down in 1977 when the ice-making equipment broke down and the city decided it would be cheaper to demolish the arena than replace the old machinery. A new and much larger arena, Copps Coliseum, was constructed six years later. Today, the Barton Street Arena site is occupied by residential housing. Hamilton Tigers
The Hamilton Tigers were a professional ice hockey team based in Hamilton, Ontario. They competed in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1920 to 1925. The Tigers were formed by the sale of the Quebec Bulldogs NHL franchise to Hamilton interests. After years of struggling, the franchise finished first in the league in the 1924–25 NHL season, but a players' strike before the playoffs resulted in the franchise's dissolution. The players' contracts were sold to New York City interests to stock the expansion New York Americans. A namesake amateur team existed prior to and during the NHL team's existence, and a minor league professional team named the Hamilton Tigers (CPHL), Hamilton Tigers existed from 1926 to 1930. Hamilton Cemetery
Hamilton Cemetery on York Boulevard in Hamilton, Ontario, is the oldest public burial ground in the city. It is located on Burlington Heights, a high sand and gravel isthmus that separates Hamilton's harbor on the east from Cootes Paradise on the west. Historically, the cemetery consists of three, separate burial grounds over 100 acres: Burlington Heights Cemetery, the Christ Church Grounds, and the Church of Ascension Grounds. It has been a contentious issue whether a flood, which around the 1860s inundated the city, necessitated the recollection of gravestones to be amassed in one place. From 1850 until 1892, each burial ground was administered separately, but by the beginning of the 1890s, the church wardens had difficulty paying for the maintenance and upkeep of their areas.
