Andrew O. Holmes
Andrew O. Holmes (May 4, 1906 – July 24, 1965) was a justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court from 1963 until his death in 1965."State Lawyers Mourn Holmes", ''The Tennessean'' (July 25, 1965), p. 1-A, 4-A. Early life and education Born in Hernando, Mississippi, Holmes moved with his family to Memphis, Tennessee in 1911, and attended Messick High School and Memphis University School before receiving a B.S. from Vanderbilt University in 1927. While at Vanderbilt, he joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and managed the school football team. He was admitted to the practice of law in Tennessee in 1928, and received an LL.B., also from Vanderbilt University, in 1929. Career and military service In 1941, he was elected to the Tennessee General Assembly. Tennessee Supreme Court
The Tennessee Supreme Court is the ultimate judicial tribunal of the state of Tennessee. Roger A. Page is the Chief Justice. Unlike other states, in which the state attorney general is directly elected or appointed by the governor or state legislature, the Tennessee Supreme Court appoints the Tennessee Attorney General. Structure The Tennessee State Constitution, adopted in 1870, calls for five justices, no more than two of whom may come from any one of the state's three Grand Divisions (East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and West Tennessee) in order to prevent regional bias. For the same purpose, the court is required to convene alternately in Knoxville, Nashville, and Jackson. In recent years this provision has been regarded as permissive rather than restrictive. Lawrence Barkley "Kitty" Creson (January 17, 1906 – June 19, 1972) was a college football and baseball player who later served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Tennessee. Vanderbilt University He graduated with a LL B. from Vanderbilt University in 1928. At Vanderbilt, Creson was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Football Creson was a prominent end for Dan McGugin's Vanderbilt Commodores of Vanderbilt University, a teammate and target of College Football Hall of Fame quarterback Bill Spears.
