Andrew Morrison
Andrew Morrison, SJ (5 June 1919 – 26 January 2004) was a Guyanese Roman Catholic Jesuit priest, journalist, and pro-democracy activist. Early life and education Morrison was born on 5 June 1919 in Georgetown, British Guiana. He attended high school at St. Stanislaus College and attended a Jesuit institution for college. He studied accounting, and following graduation, he returned to Georgetown to work at an accounting firm. Career Morrison joined the Society of Jesus in 1949 at the age of 30, and was sent to Great Britain to study for the priesthood, as Guyana is a member of the Jesuits' British Province. He was ordained a priest on 31 July 1957, the feast day of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. He was sent back to British Guiana (independent Guyana since 1966) and served as youth chaplain of the Green Light Organisation, a Catholic social ministry. The ''Stabroek News'' is a privately owned newspaper published in Guyana. It takes its name from ''Stabroek'' , the former name of Georgetown, Guyana. It was first published in November 1986, first as a weekly but it later changed to a daily print newspaper. The entry of the paper into the mass media in Guyana brought a new openness to the media environment in the country. It was founded by David DeCaires, who died on November 1, 2008. Hugh O'Shaughnessy (21 January 1935 – 1 March 2022) was an English journalist and writer. Biography O'Shaughnessy was born in Reading, Berkshire of Irish parents. His father, Charles, was a porter at the Home Office, and his mother, Mary (nee Donovan), was an administrative assistant. He was educated at the Catholic St Benedict’s school in Ealing and Worcester College, Oxford where he received a BA in Modern Languages. For over 40 years he wrote for major newspapers including ''The Economist'', ''The Observer'', ''The Independent'', ''The Irish Times'', the ''Financial Times'' and most frequently ''The Guardian''; and he made many reports for BBC News. Murder Of Bernard Darke
On 14 July 1979 Bernard Darke, a British-born, Guyana-based Jesuit priest and photographer for the ''Catholic Standard'', was stabbed to death by members of the House of Israel, a religious cult closely tied to the People's National Congress, while photographing Working People's Alliance demonstrations of the PNC. Guyana's ''Stabroek News'' described the murder as "the low point of democracy in Guyana" and, for those in the media, "perhaps the most traumatic event of the orbesBurnham regime."
