Andrew Hong
Andrew Z. Hong is an American chess grandmaster. Chess career Hong became interested in chess in 2012, and was introduced to the game by his older brother. He then joined the same chess club and began playing in competitive tournaments. He was nationally ranked #1 for his age group. Hong was part of the KCF Young Stars Program, run by former World Champion Garry Kasparov. In September 2021, Hong defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi and Wesley So at the PRO Chess League Arena Royale. Hong later earned the title of Grandmaster after achieving his final norm at the Charlotte Chess Center & Scholastic Academy Labor Day Norm Invitational in North Carolina. Grandmaster (chess)
Grandmaster (GM) is a title awarded to chess players by the world chess organization FIDE. Apart from World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain. Once achieved, the title is held for life, though exceptionally it has been revoked for cheating. The title of Grandmaster, along with the lesser FIDE titles of International Master (IM) and FIDE Master (FM), is open to all players regardless of gender. The great majority of grandmasters are men, but 40 women have been awarded the GM title as of 2022, out of a total of about 2000 grandmasters. Since about the year 2000, most of the top 10 women have held the GM title. There is also a Woman Grandmaster title with lower requirements awarded only to women. Wesley So
Wesley Barbossa So (born October 9, 1993) is a Filipino and American chess grandmaster and 3-time U.S. Chess Champion (in 2017, 2020, and 2021). He is also a three-time Philippine Chess Champion. On the March 2017 FIDE rating list, he was ranked number two in the world and had an Elo rating of 2822, making him the fifth-highest rated player in history. In 2019, So said his favorite form of chess is chess960. Norm (chess)
A norm in chess is a high level of performance in a chess tournament. The level of performance is typically measured in tournament performance rating above a certain threshold (for instance, 2600 for GM norm), and there is a requirement on the level of tournament, for instance by a prescribed minimal number of participants of given title/level one meets. Several norms are among the requirements to receive a title such as Grandmaster from FIDE. Grandmaster norm To qualify for the title of Grandmaster (GM) of chess, a title awarded by FIDE, the World Chess Federation, a player must achieve two or more grandmaster norms in events covering a minimum of 27 games. World Rapid Chess Championship 2023
The World Rapid Chess Championship 2023 was the 2023 edition of the annual World Rapid Chess Championship held by FIDE to determine the world champion in chess played under rapid time controls. Since 2012, FIDE has held the World Rapid and Blitz Championships at a joint tournament. The tournament was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from 26 to 28 December 2023, using a Swiss-system with 13 rounds for the open tournament and 11 rounds for the women's tournament. Players eligible to participate in the open tournament were either be rated at least 2550 Elo in a FIDE rating list during 2023, or reigning national champion. The time control was 15 minutes per player with a 10-second per-move increment. Participants 202 players took part in the open tournament, and 117 in the women's tournament. The 2023 World Blitz Chess Championship was the 2023 edition of the annual chess tournament held by FIDE to determine the world champion in chess played under blitz time controls. Since 2012, FIDE has held the World World Rapid Chess Championship 2023, Rapid and Blitz Championships at a joint tournament. The tournament was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from 26 to 30 December 2023, using a Swiss-system tournament, Swiss-system with 21 rounds for the open tournament and 17 rounds for the women's tournament.
