Andrew Graham (baseball)
Andrew Graham (born 22 April 1982, in Sydney) is an Australian baseball manager and former player who played with the Detroit Tigers organization from 2003–2007. Graham is currently the manager of the Lakeland Flying Tigers, a minor league affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Growing up in Australia he played baseball for the Ku-ring-gai Stealers Baseball Club. Early career Graham started his baseball career with Armstrong Atlantic State University in 2003. The Tigers picked him up in the 19th round of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft. He was assigned to the Oneonta Tigers and hit .182 in his first season. In 2004, he played for Oneonta (.280 in 8 games) and the West Michigan Whitecaps (.253 in 26 games). In baseball, the field manager (commonly referred to as the manager) is the equivalent of a head coach who is responsible for overseeing and making final decisions on all aspects of on-field team strategy, lineup selection, training and instruction. Managers are typically assisted by a staff of assistant coaches whose responsibilities are specialized. Sydney Blue Sox
The Sydney Blue Sox are a professional baseball team, and one of eight foundation teams in the re-formed Australian Baseball League (ABL). The team plays their home games at Blacktown International Sportspark (BISP), one of the two venues used for baseball at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, when it was known as Blacktown Olympic Park. The Blue Sox hosted the league's Opening Day for the inaugural season on 6 November 2010, when they played against the Canberra Cavalry, and won the game 1–0. The Blue Sox are the only team in the Australian Baseball League to implement sabermetrics as a way to run their team with volunteer statistician, Anthony Rescan. Australian Baseball League
The Australian Baseball League (ABL) is a professional baseball league in Australia. The league is governed by the Australian Baseball Federation (ABF). It uses the same name as a now-defunct competition held during the 1990s, and though it shares some history of the original league with the Claxton Shield awarded to winners of both competitions, it is considered to be a separate competition. Because the ABL's season takes place from November to February, the ABL is one of baseball's recognised winter leagues (although it is summer in Australia when the season takes place), where minor-league prospects in North America are often assigned as an English-speaking alternative to the primary Spanish-speaking Latin America-based winter leagues. The 2009 Baseball World Cup (BWC) was the 38th international Men's amateur baseball tournament. The tournament was sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation, which titled it the Amateur World Series from the 1938 tournament through the 1986 AWS. The 2009 tournament was held, for the first time, across a continent — with games played in 27 cities across eight European countries, from September 9 to 27. The final was a repeat of the previous BWC final, with the United States again defeating Cuba, winning its fourth title. There were 22 participating countries (which stands as the most ever in tournament history), with 20 teams split into five groups for the first round, after which "official" host Italy and 2007 European Champion Netherlands joined the advancing 14 teams in the second round. Joel Matthew Naughton (born 27 August 1986) is an Australian catcher for the Brisbane Bandits. Professional career Philadelphia Phillies Naughton made his professional debut in 2005 with the Rookie-Level Gulf Coast League Phillies. He batted .275 with three doubles, one home run and 11 RBIs in 29 games. In 2006 Naughton spent the season with Class-A Short-Season Batavia Muckdogs. 2009 World Baseball Classic
The 2009 World Baseball Classic (WBC) was an international baseball competition. It began on 5 9 and finished 5 26. Unlike in 2006, when the round-robin format of the first two rounds led to some eliminations being decided by run-difference tiebreakers, the first two rounds of the 2009 edition were modified double-elimination format. The modification was that the final game of each bracket was winner-take-all, even if won by the team emerging from the loser's bracket, although that game only affected seeding, as two teams always advanced from each bracket. The biggest surprise in the first round was the Netherlands, which twice defeated the Dominican Republic in Pool D to advance. Dane Kealoha A. A. Sardinha (born April 8, 1979) is an American former Major League Baseball catcher who played for the Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, and Philadelphia Phillies between 2003 and 2011. Amateur career A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Sardinha was a high school standout at Kamehameha Schools; prior to his senior year, ''USA Today'' named him a "Super 25 preseason selection," while ''Baseball America'' named him a third-team All-American. Fresno State University and Pepperdine University recruited him, and the Kansas City Royals selected him in the second round (59th pick overall) of the 1997 MLB Draft, but Sardinha did not sign. Toledo Mud Hens
The Toledo Mud Hens are a Minor League Baseball team of the International League and the Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. They are located in Toledo, Ohio, and play their home games at Fifth Third Field. A Mud Hens team has played in Toledo for most seasons since 1896, including a 50-year history as a member of the now defunct American Association. The current franchise was established in 1965. They joined Triple-A East in 2021, but this was renamed the International League in 2022. Background Professional baseball had been played off and on in Toledo since 1883, and the Mud Hens era began in 1896 with the "Swamp Angels", who played in the Interstate League. The 2007 Claxton Shield was the 73rd anniversary of the event, it was held between 19 and 28 January 2007, at Baseball Park in Western Australia, the first to be held outside of Blacktown Baseball Stadium in New South Wales since 2002 when it was held at the Melbourne Ballpark. Matthew Kent
Matthew Kent (born 2 July 1980 in Melbourne, Australia) is a baseball player. Kent signed with the Seattle Mariners in 1997 at the age of 16 as a catcher and from 1998–1999 he played for the AZL Mariners in the Arizona League. In 2000, Kent was promoted to A- with the Everett AquaSox. After only producing a poor season with the bat, Kent was released from the Seattle organisation for the 2001 season. In 2006, the Boston Red Sox picked up Kent after a six-year absence in the States and played A+ ball for the Wilmington Blue Rocks as well as playing a few games for the Pawtucket Red Sox. However, Kent failed to product with the bat, batting a dismal .133 for the season and was released by Boston at the end of the season.
