Andrew Buchanan Of Drumpellier
Andrew Buchanan of Drumpellier (1690–1759) was a Scottish tobacco merchant who was one of Glasgow's "Tobacco Lords". He served as Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1740 to 1742. Buchanan Street in Glasgow is named after him. Life Andrew Buchanan was born in 1690. He was the second of four sons to George Buchanan, a maltster in Glasgow, and his wife, Mary Maxwell, daughter of Gabriel Maxwell a Glasgow merchant. Andrew Buchanan (10 December 1798 – 1882) was a Scottish surgeon and academic. He served as Regius Professor of the Institutes of Medicine at the University of Glasgow from 1839 to 1876. Andrew Buchanan (10 December 1807 – 4 September 1877) was a member of the New Zealand Legislative Council from 24 July 1862 to 30 June 1874, when he resigned. Early life Buchanan was born at Heathfield, St. Anns, Jamaica on 10 December 1807, the fourth son (and eighth child) of George Buchanan (1758–1826) a Scots-born sugar planter and Jane Gowie (1777–1815) daughter of a Scottish St. Kitts planter. In 1816, following the death of his mother, he returned to Great Britain with the remainder of his family and settled at Sherborne, Dorset. He completed his education in Sherborne before traveling to Paris to study medicine. Whilst in Paris he became embroiled in the 1830 Polish uprising against the Russians (the November Uprising or Cadet War q.v.) and, finding his sympathies lay with the Poles, joined the Polish Army as a surgeon, remaining with them until the Russians finally put down the uprising in 1831. Family Buchanan was the only son of James Buchanan of Blairvadach, Ardinconnal, Dumbartonshire, and Janet, the eldest daughter of James Sinclair, 12th Earl of Caithness. He married first on 4 April 1839 Frances Katharine, the daughter of the Very Rev Edward Mellish, dean of Hereford (she died 4 December 1854).
