Andrew Bird Glaspie
Andrew Bird Glaspie (November 21, 1876 – September 3, 1943) was an American soldier, politician, newspaper publisher, and college football player and coach. Early years Glaspie was born in November 1876 at Oxford, Michigan. His father, Andrew P. Glaspie, operated a general store in Oxford and was a clothier, Civil War veteran, and Michigan native. His mother, Amy (Bird) Glaspie, was also a Michigan native. Oxford is a village in Oakland County, Michigan, Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,436 at the 2010 United States census, 2010 census. The village is located within Oxford Charter Township, Michigan, Oxford Township. Located about north of Detroit, it is a northern suburb of the Metro Detroit region. History During the early 19th century the northeast Oakland County, Michigan, Oakland County area was largely avoided by the early settlers because it was believed to be nothing but impenetrable swamp land. The area was, at that time, nicknamed "The Barren Plains of Oxford." It was called this primarily because of a report made in 1812 by the U.S. Surveyor General that described the area as a poor, barren, sandy land, on which scarcely any vegetation could grow with the exception of some very small scrubby oaks. Michigan Senate
The Michigan Senate is the upper house of the Michigan Legislature. Along with the Michigan House of Representatives, it composes the state legislature, which has powers, roles and duties defined by Article IV of the Michigan Constitution, adopted in 1963. The primary purpose of the Legislature is to enact new laws and amend or repeal existing laws. The Michigan Senate is composed of 38 members, each elected from a single-member district with a population of between approximately 212,400 to 263,500 residents. Legislative districts are drawn on the basis of population figures, provided by the federal decennial census. Senators' terms begin immediately upon their election. Republicans hold the majority in the State Senate with twenty-two seats; Democrats hold the minority with sixteen seats.
