Andrei Karelin
Andrei Osipovich Karelin (Russian: ''Андре́й О́сипович Каре́лин'', 16 July 1837, near Tambov — 12 August 1906, Nizhny Novgorod) — was a Russian painter and photographer. Biography He was the illegitimate son of Tatyana Karelina, a peasant woman. In 1847, he went to Tambov to study icon painting. Ten years later, he was able to enroll at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. Soon after, he began taking his first photographs. In 1863, he was awarded two small silver medals, for drawings from nature. He completed his studies the following year, and was awarded the title of "Free Artist". In 1865, with his wife, Evgenia, and their two children, he moved to Kostroma. There, he worked in the photography studios operated by . The following year, Evgenia died while giving birth to their third child, , who would become a well known portrait painter. Yuryevets (russian: Ю́рьевец) is a town and the administrative center of Yuryevetsky District in Ivanovo Oblast, Russia, located at the confluence of the Unzha and the Volga Rivers. Blind man's buff or blind man's bluff is a variant of tag in which the player who is "It" is blindfolded. The traditional name of the game is "blind man's buff", where the word ''buff'' is used in its older sense of a small push. Gameplay Blind man's buff is played in a spacious area, such as outdoors or in a large room, in which one player, designated as "It", is blindfolded and gropes around attempting to touch the other players without being able to see them, while the other players scatter and try to avoid the person who is "it", hiding in plain sight and sometimes teasing them to influence them to change direction. When the "it" player catches someone, the caught player becomes "it" and the catcher flees from them. Magic Lantern
The magic lantern, also known by its Latin name , is an early type of image projector that used pictures—paintings, prints, or photographs—on transparent plates (usually made of glass), one or more lenses, and a light source. Because a single lens inverts an image projected through it (as in the phenomenon which inverts the image of a camera obscura), slides were inserted upside down in the magic lantern, rendering the projected image correctly oriented. It was mostly developed in the 17th century and commonly used for entertainment purposes. It was increasingly used for education during the 19th century. Since the late 19th century, smaller versions were also mass-produced as toys. A total solar eclipse occurred on 19 August 1887. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is larger than the Sun's, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across Earth's surface, with the partial solar eclipse visible over a surrounding region thousands of kilometres wide. It was visible across Europe, Asia, and Japan. Observations The Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev ascended in a balloon near Moscow to observe this eclipse. The weather in Tver Governorate was cloudy and it was rain at morning, so Mendeleev forced to fly alone. Exposition Universelle (1878)
The third Paris World's Fair, called an Exposition Universelle in French, was held from 1 May to 10 November 1878. It celebrated the recovery of France after the 1870–71 Franco-Prussian War. Construction The buildings and the fairgrounds were somewhat unfinished on opening day, as political complications had prevented the French government from paying much attention to the exhibition until six months before it was due to open. However, efforts made in April were prodigious, and by 1 June, a month after the formal opening, the exhibition was finally completed. This exposition was on a far larger scale than any previously held anywhere in the world. It covered over , the main building in the Champ de Mars and the hill of Chaillot, occupying .
