Andreas Tofte
Andreas Tofte (28 March 1795 – 27 September 1852) was a Norwegian people, Norwegian businessperson, elected official and philanthropist. He served as the first Mayor of Oslo, Norway. Biography He was born on the Tofte, Norway, Tofte farm at Hurum in Buskerud, Norway. He was a son of landowner Mads Trulsen Tofte (1750–1823) and Elisabeth Borch (1749–1826). In November 1819, he married Christine Søeberg (1797–1848) in Drammen. His daughter married businessman Thorvald Meyer, who inherited his enterprises. He was also an ancestor of Erling Christophersen and Christian Schweigaard Stang. In 1819, Tofte moved from Hurum to Christiania (now Oslo), where he established commercial citizenship. He operated a Freight company, carriage and Freight transport, shipping business which within 10 years made him a wealthy man. Thorvald Meyer
Thorvald Meyer (23 September 1818 – 3 February 1909) was a Norwegian businessman and philanthropist. He was a wholesaler, retailer and shipowner as well as a land owner and developer. Biography Meyer was born in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway. He was one of twelve children born to of Jacob Peter Meyer (1781–1856) and Ingeborg Marie Barth Muus (1781–1835). His father was a successful merchant, shipowner and timber wholesaler. As the son of a wealthy businessman, he received his education in France and England. He entered the father's firm in 1848. He also became involved in the business enterprise of his wife's father, Andreas Tofte. In 1852, following the death of his father-in-law, he took over the family enterprises. In 1856, upon the death of his father, he inherited his father's company. Toftes Gave
Toftes Gave was a Norwegian orphanage for enforced placement of maladjusted children, or children in deficit of parental care. It was established in 1844 in ''Munkedamsveien'' in Christiania. The institution was relocated to Ullensaker in 1858, and again to the island of Helgøya in 1876. The institution closed in 1947. History The institution was established by wholesaler and former mayor of Christiania Andreas Tofte in 1844, as a "rescuing institution for morally corrupt children of both sexes". It was originally located at ''Munkedamsveien 31'' in Christiania, at Holmen in Pipervika. In 1847 the institution, including seven buildings, was donated to the municipality of Christiania. Vår Frelsers Gravlund
The Cemetery of Our Saviour ( no, Vår Frelsers gravlund) is a cemetery in Oslo, Norway, located north of Hammersborg in Gamle Aker district. It is located adjacent to the older Old Aker Cemetery and was created in 1808 as a result of the great famine and cholera epidemic of the Napoleonic Wars. Its grounds were extended in 1911. The cemetery has been full and thus closed for new graves since 1952, with interment only being allowed in existing family graves. The cemetery includes five sections, including ''Æreslunden'', Norway's main honorary burial ground, and the western, southern, eastern and northern sections. The Cemetery of Our Saviour became the preferred cemetery of bourgeois and other upper-class families. It has many grand tombstones and is the most famous cemetery in Norway.
