Andrea Mastroni is an Italian basso profondo. Born in Milan, he first studied clarinet before training as a singer and studying philosophical aesthetics. Basso profondo (Italian: "deep bass"), sometimes basso profundo, contrabass or oktavist, is the lowest bass voice type. It is the first of Schubert's two seminal cycles (preceding ''Winterreise'')'','' and a pinnacle of ''Lied'' repertoire. ''Die schöne Müllerin'' is performed by a pianist and a solo singer. The libretto by Gaetano Rossi is based on Voltaire's tragedy ''Semiramis'', which in turn was based on the legend of Semiramis of Assyria.
