Andre Smith (Nebraska Basketball)
Andre Smith is an American former basketball player. He is best known for his collegiate career at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in the late 1970s and early 1980s. A native of Chicago, Illinois, Smith played an undersized center (basketball), center at 6'7". Between 1977–78 and 1980–81 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, 1980–81, Smith scored 1,717 points in 114 games for a career average of 15.1 points per game. At the time of his graduation, he was second on the all-time Nebraska Cornhuskers men's basketball, Cornhuskers scoring list. Smith is still found in the top 10 on many other school records. During his Junior (education year), junior and senior (education), senior years he was named a First Team All-Big 8 Conference member, and at the conclusion of his final season was named the Big 8 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year. The center (C), or the centre, also known as the five or the pivot, is one of the five Basketball position, positions in a regulation basketball game. The center is normally the tallest player on the team, and often has a great deal of strength and body mass as well. In the NBA, the center is typically close to tall. They traditionally play close to the basket in the low post. Centers are valued for their ability to protect their own goal from high-percentage close attempts on defense, while scoring and rebounding with high efficiency on offense. In the 1950s and 1960s, George Mikan and Bill Russell were centerpieces of championship dynasties and defined early prototypical centers.
