Amur Class Submarine
The ''Amur''-class submarine (named for the Amur River), is one of the latest Russian submarine designs. It is advertised as an export version of the , a modernized version of the with improved acoustic stealth, new combat systems, and an option for air-independent propulsion (AIP). The new vessels are the fourth generation of the Kilo submarine family, with two models developed. As advertised, the ''Amur''-1650 is larger and intended for longer missions. The ''Amur''-950 is armed with a VLS missile system capable of salvo-fire at multiple predesignated targets. Sonar signatures of these submarines are several times lower than the older Kilo-class submarines. The ''Kalvari'' class is a class of diesel-electric attack submarines based on the being built for the Indian Navy. The class and submarines take their names from the first submarines inducted in the Indian Navy. The submarines are designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS and are being manufactured by Mazagon Dock Limited in Mumbai. Project history In 1997, Indian Ministry of Defence approved a plan to acquire 24 submarines under Project 75. In 1998, India began negotiating with DCN for four Scorpène submarines with two to be built in Mazagon Dock Limited from knocked-down kits. A cruise missile submarine is a submarine that carries and launches cruise missiles (SLCMs and anti-ship missiles) as its primary armament. Missiles greatly enhance a vessel's ability to attack surface combatants and strike land targets, and although torpedoes are a more stealthy option, missiles give a much longer stand-off range, as well as the ability to engage multiple targets on different headings at the same time.
