James Amster
James Amster (July 18, 1908 – June 11, 1986) was an interior decorator in New York City in the 1960s who created Amster Yard, a New York City designated landmark. Early life Amster was born on July 18, 1908, in Lynn, Massachusetts, and grew up in Boston, in a house with a yard, probably the reason why he decided to restore Amster Yard in Manhattan. Amster attended the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he studied sculpture and painting. Career Amster was known for his community involvement in the Turtle Bay, Manhattan, neighborhood, and for his traditional style as an interior decorator. At first, Amster worked for Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury goods department store based on Fifth Avenue in New York City, and opened and managed its decorating and antiques department. Mauricio Amster
Mauricio Amster Cats (1907–1980) was born in Lemburg and died in Santiago, Chile. He was a typographer, calligrapher, illustrator, graphic artist and designer, educator, writer, translator, and book collector who designed more than 500 books in Chile. Early life Amster was born into a Sephardic Jewish family and finished his bachelor education in Lviv. In 1927, he left for Austria, leaving his family behind (his parents died in the Nazi concentration camp in Belzec). Shortly after arriving in Vienna, he was unable to continue his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts; he left for Berlin, where he studied at the Reimann School between 1927 and 1930. In Depression-ravaged Germany, he could not find work and subsequently moved to Madrid, Spain. Life in Spain He worked as a freelance artist for publishers Dedalo, Oriente, Zeus, and Ulises.
