Amethyst Stakes
The Amethyst Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Ireland open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres) at Leopardstown in May. History The event was formerly staged at Phoenix Park. For a period it held Listed status. Known previously by sponsored titles, it was renamed the Amethyst Stakes in 1989. It was transferred to Leopardstown in 1991. The Amethyst Stakes was promoted to Group 3 level in 2007. Leopardstown Racecourse
Leopardstown Racecourse is an Ireland, Irish horse-racing venue, located in Leopardstown, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, 8 km south of the Dublin city centre. Like the majority of Irish courses, it hosts both National Hunt and Flat racing. The course, built by Captain George Quin and modelled on Sandown Park Racecourse in England, was completed in 1888 and acquired by the Horse Racing Ireland, Horse Racing Board of Ireland in 1967. Many important races are held here and racing takes place all year round, with about 22 meetings per year. In 1941, noted Royal Air Force pilot Hugh Verity, who flew many secret agents at night into and out of farm fields in France, force landed on the Race Course. Cash Asmussen
Cash Asmussen (born March 15, 1962 in Agar, South Dakota) is an American thoroughbred horse racing jockey. Born Brian Keith Asmussen, in 1977 he legally changed his name to "Cash". From a Texas horse racing family, his parents, Keith and Marilyn "Sis" Asmussen, operate a ranch in Laredo in Webb County, Texas. His brother, Steve Asmussen, is a successful horse trainer in American racing. Career Asmussen scored his first important graded stakes race win at the Beldame Stakes in 1979 and won that year's Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey. In 1981, he rode Wayward Lass to victory in the Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park (over the 1-5 entry of De La Rose and Heavenly Cause, who ran last and next-to-last), and traveled to Japan where he won the Japan Cup. Pat Smullen
Patrick Joseph Smullen (22 May 1977 – 15 September 2020), was an Irish jockey who won the Irish flat racing Champion Jockey title nine times. In a career running from 1992 to 2018 he rode 1,845 winners in Ireland and 47 in Britain. Amongst his biggest successes were riding Harzand (horse), Harzand to victories in the Epsom Derby and Irish Derby in 2016. He was stable jockey to Dermot Weld from 1999 until 2018. Background and apprenticeship Smullen was born in County Offaly and was introduced to riding and racing by his brother Sean, who worked for trainer Joanna Morgan. Tommy Stack
Tommy Stack (born 15 November 1945 in Moyvane, County Kerry, Ireland) is a former National Hunt racing jockey and trainer. As a jockey, he is probably best known for piloting Red Rum to a third Grand National victory. Stack was National Hunt Champion Jockey for the 1974–75 and 1976-77 seasons. He got his first trainer's licence in 1986. In 1994 he trained Las Meninas to win the 1000 Guineas. His other major winners include Tarascon (Irish 1000 Guineas) and Kostroma ( Beverly D. Stakes). Stack survived a life-threatening viral infection in December 1998. Following his recovery, he had further international success with Myboycharlie (Prix Morny) and Alexander Tango (Garden City Stakes). Wayne Lordan
Wayne Lordan is a multiple Group race winning Irish jockey. His first winner was Ethbaat for trainer Gerry Cully at Killarney on 15 July 1998. In his early career he was associated with the stables of David Wachman and Tommy Stack. He also rode occasionally for Eddie Lynam. It was for Lynam he won his first Group 1 on the unfancied Sole Power in the 2010 Nunthorpe Stakes at York. At 100/1, the horse was the longest priced winner of a British Group 1 for 35 years. Another horse owned by the Power bookmaking family, Slade Power, and also trained by Lynam gave him even greater success, winning three Group 1 sprints over the course of 2013 and 2014 - the British Champions Sprint Stakes, the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and the July Cup. Seamie Heffernan
James Anthony "Seamie" Heffernan (born 17 July 1972) is an Irish flat racing jockey who rides mainly for horse racing trainer Aidan O'Brien. From a family with no racing connections Heffernan was introduced to the sport when he took a summer holiday job with the National Hunt trainer Arthur Moore. He began his racing career as an apprentice jockey for P J Finn and rode his first winner on 10 August 1988 at the age of sixteen. When Finn retired he moved to the yard of Jim Bolger and shared the Irish champion apprentices title in 1994. He was runner-up in the same competition in 1995 and moved to Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle stable in 1996 where he was second jockey after Christy Roche. Jim Bolger (racehorse Trainer)
James S. Bolger (born 25 December 1941) is a thoroughbred racehorse trainer and breeder based in Coolcullen in County Kilkenny. For many years, he has been recognised as one of the racing greats in Ireland. Aidan O'Brien, Tony McCoy and Paul Carberry were all apprenticed to him before gaining professional recognition in their own right. During the 2006 flat season, Bolger trained Teofilo to go unbeaten at the age of two. This five-race unbeaten streak included victories in the Group 1 National Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes. Talk of an English Triple Crown bid was imminent, but Teofilo suffered a career-ending injury in the lead up to the 2,000 Guineas and never saw a racecourse again. Kevin James Manning (born March 1967) is an Irish flat racing jockey. Manning rides principally for the stable of Jim Bolger. He has won both the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby. Manning was champion flat racing apprentice jockey in Ireland on two accessions and was appointed as stable jockey to Jim Bolger in 1993. Manning won his first Group 1 race on Eva Luna in the 1994 Phoenix Stakes and his first classic race victory came in the 2002 Irish Oaks on Margarula. Unusual Heat (January 1, 1990 – May 17, 2017) was a Thoroughbred stallion owned by a syndicate headed by California breeder/owner Madeline Auerbach in conjunction with California trainer Barry Abrams. Brief Truce
Brief Truce (8 May 1989 – 14 August 2018) was an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After winning his only race as a juvenile in 1991 he improved in the spring of the following year to finish third in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and win both the Amethyst Stakes and the Gallinule Stakes. In June he recorded his biggest win when he defeated a very strong field in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Later that year he was placed in the Prix du Moulin, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Breeders' Cup Mile. After his retirement from racing he had some success as a breeding stallion in Australia.
