Ames, Kansas
Ames is an unincorporated community in Cloud County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the community and nearby areas was 33. It is located a couple miles southwest of Clyde next to state highway K-9. History Ames was founded in 1883. A post office was opened in Shirley in 1868 (also known as Elm Creek, it is now part of Shirley Township averages a population of 40), but the post office was moved to Ames in 1878 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1993. Demographics For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Ames as a census-designated place (CDP). Central Branch Union Pacific Railroad
The Central Branch Union Pacific Railroad was a railroad in the U.S. state of Kansas. Originally planned as a line from Atchison west into Colorado, and given federal land grants by the Pacific Railway Act of 1862 as one of the branches of the Union Pacific Railroad, it was left with a hanging end at Waterville, Kansas when the Union Pacific Railway, Eastern Division, with which it was to connect, changed its route. The line was acquired by the Union Pacific through a stock purchase by Jay Gould and leased to the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1880. In 1909 the Central Branch was merged into the Missouri Pacific; the latter company came back into the Union Pacific system in 1982. In 1991 the remaining trackage west of Frankfort was leased to the Kyle Railroad. K-9 (Kansas Highway)
K-9 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Kansas. The highway goes east–west through Kansas. It has its western terminus south of Dresden at an intersection with K-123 and an eastern terminus at its junction with U.S. Route 73 near Lancaster. K-9 is the second longest state highway after K-4. Route description K-9 begins south of Dresden at K-123 on the border between Sheridan and Decatur counties. After starting out along the border, it gradually follows an east-northeast alignment, as the highway parallels the north fork of the Solomon River. Clyde is a city in Cloud County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 694. It is located east of Concordia along state highway K-9. History Clyde was laid out in 1867, making it the oldest town in Cloud County. It was named after the River Clyde in Scotland, or according to another source, it was named for Clyde, Ohio (which also is named indirectly for the River Clyde).
