The American Sociological Association (ASA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the discipline and profession of sociology. Founded in December 1905 as the American Sociological Society at Johns Hopkins University by a group of fifty people, the first president of the association would be Lester Frank Ward. Today, most of its members work in academia, while around 20 percent of them work in government, business, or non-profit organizations. ASA publishes ten academic journals and magazines, along with four section journals. Patricia Yancey Martin
Patricia Yancey Martin is an American sociologist. She is the Daisy Parker Flory Professor of Sociology Emerita at Florida State University. Education Martin was inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta her freshman year at University of Alabama in 1959. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from University of Alabama in 1962 with Phi Beta Kappa honors. She was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow in 1962. In 1964, she completed a Master of Arts in sociology from Florida State University and was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi and Alpha Kappa Delta. Judith Lorber
Judith Lorber (born November 28, 1931) is Professor Emerita of Sociology and Women’s Studies at The CUNY Graduate Center and Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. She is a foundational theorist of social construction of gender difference and has played a vital role in the formation and transformation of gender studies. She has more recently called for a de-gendering of the social world. Lorber was actively involved in Sociologists for Women in Society from the early 1970s. Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo is an American sociologist. Her main areas of research are gender, migration studies, and Latino studies. Nona Y. Glazer (born 1932) is a professor emerita of sociology and women's studies. Early life and education Nona Glazer was born in 1932. She graduated with a bachelor's degree and master's degree from the University of Oregon, and a PhD from Cornell University.
