American Chestnut Cooperators Foundation
The American Chestnut Cooperators Foundation (ACCF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit scientific and educational foundation organized in 1984. They are dedicated to restoring the American chestnut (''Castanea dentata'') to its former place in the United States' Eastern hardwood forests. Priorities include the development of blight resistant chestnuts and economical biological control measures against chestnut blight in forests. ACCF supports American chestnut research and engages senior citizens, school children, volunteers, and professionals which allows them to help in planting, grafting, and managing the fruits of this research. Breeding for blight resistance is currently pursued by two separate foundations: The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) and the American Chestnut Cooperators Foundation. American Chestnut
The American chestnut (''Castanea dentata'') is a large, fast-growing deciduous tree of the beech family native to eastern North America. As is true of all species in genus Castanea, the American chestnut produces burred fruit with edible nuts. The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) is a nonprofit American organization dedicated to breeding a blight-resistant American chestnut (''Castanea dentata'') tree and the reintroduction of this tree to the forests of the Eastern United States. Concord University
Concord University (Concord) is a public university in Athens, West Virginia. It was founded on February 28, 1872, when the West Virginia Legislature passed "an Act to locate a Branch State Normal School, in the town of Concord Church, in the County of Mercer". Castanea Dentata Field Trial
The chestnuts are the deciduous trees and shrubs in the genus ''Castanea'', in the beech family Fagaceae. They are native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The name also refers to the edible nuts they produce. The unrelated horse chestnuts (genus ''Aesculus'') are not true chestnuts, but are named for producing nuts of similar appearance that are mildly poisonous to humans. True chestnuts should also not be confused with water chestnuts, which are tubers of an aquatic herbaceous plant in the sedge family Cyperaceae. Other species commonly mistaken for chestnut trees are the chestnut oak (''Quercus prinus'') and the American beech (''Fagus grandifolia''),Chestnut Tree in chestnuttree.net. both of which are also in the Fagaceae family. |
