The American Association for the History of Medicine is an American professional association dedicated to the study of medical history. Background It is the largest society dedicated to medical history in the United States, and the oldest such organization in North America. It was established in 1925 as the American Section of the International Society for the History of Medicine, and obtained its current name in 1958. Its first president was Fielding Hudson Garrison. Medical History
The medical history, case history, or anamnesis (from Greek: ἀνά, ''aná'', "open", and μνήσις, ''mnesis'', "memory") of a patient is information gained by a physician by asking specific questions, either to the patient or to other people who know the person and can give suitable information, with the aim of obtaining information useful in formulating a diagnosis and providing medical care to the patient. International Society For The History Of Medicine
The International Society for the History of Medicine is a non profit international society devoted to the academic study of the history of medicine, including the organization of international congresses. The Society was founded in 1920 in Belgium. The society is present in 50 countries, holds delegations in 38 countries, and has about 800 members. Fielding Hudson Garrison
Colonel Fielding Hudson Garrison, Doctor of Medicine, MD (November 5, 1870 – April 18, 1935) was an acclaimed history of medicine, medical historian, bibliographer, and librarian of medicine. Garrison's ''An Introduction to the History of Medicine'' (1913) is a landmark text in this field. Biography Garrison was born in Washington, D.C. and received his Bachelor of Arts, A.B. in 1890 from the Johns Hopkins University and his M.D. in 1893 from Georgetown University. The son of U.S. Treasury Comptroller John Rowzee Garrison and noted Washington, D.C. civic volunteer Catherine Jane Jennie Davis, he married Clara Augusta Brown in 1910 in Washington, D.C. and they eventually had three daughters.
