Amelung was born at Võisiku (german: Woiseck) manor in Governorate of Livonia of the Russian Empire (present-day Jõgeva County in Estonia). 1862–1864 he studied philosophy and chemistry at the University of Dorpat. 1864–1879 and 1885–1902 he was the director of the Rõika-Meleski mirror factory which he inherited from his father. Amelung published writings about the culture and history of Estonian localities like Viljandi, Tallinn and Põltsamaa. Amelung was known as a chess player and a famous chess quiz's author. 1879–1885 he lived in Reval (now Tallinn) and studied the chess history of the Baltics. 	John Frederick Amelung John Frederick Amelung (c. 1741–1798) was a Germany, German-United States, American glass artist active in Maryland. Biography He was born in the Free imperial city, free city of Bremen in either 1741 or 1742. A glassmaker by trade, Amelung immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland in 1784. In Maryland, he became the founder of the New Bremen Glass manufactory. The company had the support of people like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. The business produced decorative glass similar to Henry William Stiegel, Stiegel glass from 1784 to about 1795. Some of the glass products contained engraved decorative ornaments in the German style. The company made detailed pieces including works for the brother of Maryland's first governor, Thomas Johnson. His business was successful, benefiting from the young American nation's desire for economic independence from British Empire, Great Britain.
