Gene Myron Amdahl (November 16, 1922 – November 10, 2015) was an American computer architect and high-tech entrepreneur, chiefly known for his work on mainframe computers at IBM and later his own companies, especially Amdahl Corporation. He formulated Amdahl's law, which states a fundamental limitation of parallel computing. Childhood and education Amdahl was born to immigrant parents of Norwegian and Swedish descent in Flandreau, South Dakota. After serving in the Navy during World War II he completed a degree in engineering physics at South Dakota State University in 1948. He went on to study theoretical physics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison under Robert G. Sachs. However, in 1950, Amdahl and Charles H. Amdahl's Law
In computer architecture, Amdahl's law (or Amdahl's argument) is a formula which gives the theoretical speedup in latency of the execution of a task at fixed workload that can be expected of a system whose resources are improved. It states that "the overall performance improvement gained by optimizing a single part of a system is limited by the fraction of time that the improved part is actually used". It is named after computer scientist Gene Amdahl, and was presented at the American Federation of Information Processing Societies (AFIPS) Spring Joint Computer Conference in 1967. Amdahl's law is often used in parallel computing to predict the theoretical speedup when using multiple processors. Bjarne Amdahl
Bjarne Fredrik Berg Amdahl (17 August 190314 April 1968) was a Norwegian pianist, composer and orchestra conductor. Personal life Amdahl was born to Seddeltrykkeriet (banknote printers) chairman Hans Amdahl (1875–1945) and Gyda Sawert (1877–1957) in Trondheim. In 1931 he married the dancer Bengta Andrea Jønsson (11 May 1910 – 3 September 2003), daughter of furniture shop keeper Andreas Jønsson (1871–1940) and politician Gitta Jønsson (b. Hagerup, 1869–1950). He died in Bærum in 1968. Career Amdahl studied piano under Melvin Simonsen, composition under Arvid Kleven and conducting under Hugo Kramm. Already when 20 years old, Amdahl was employed as orchestra conductor (kapellmester) at the Operette Theater Mayol in Kristiania (now Oslo) in 1923. Einar Amdahl
Einar Amdahl (3 March 1888 – 22 May 1974) was a Norwegian theologian. Einar Amdahl led the Norwegian Missionary Society for more than 30 years. Biography He was born at Selbu in Trøndelag, Norway. He was the son of Peder Einarsen Amdahl (1863–1942) and Marit Bardosdatter (1862–1942). He was raised in a Haugean movement home. He attended Hans Nielsen Hauge Minde in Kristiania and graduated in 1910. He was ordained a priest in 1916 and was called to the newly created position of assistant secretary general of the Norwegian Missionary Society (''Det Norske Misjonsselskap''). He served as secretary-general for the society from 1923. Amdahl resigned from his office in 1957 to be replaced by Fridtjov Søiland Birkeli.
