Ólafur Egilsson (ambassador)
Ólafur Egilsson (1564 – 1 March 1639) was an Icelandic Lutheran minister. In 1627, he was abducted, along with his wife and two sons, by Barbary Pirates under the Ottoman Empire during their raid on Vestmannaeyjar. The raid is known in Icelandic history as '' Tyrkjaránið'' ( The Turkish abductions). He returned to Vestmannaeyjar in 1628 but his wife Ásta Þorsteinsdóttir did not return until 1637 and his sons never returned. He later wrote a memoir of his abduction and return, which was published both in Iceland and in Denmark. Ólafur Egilsson and his wife Ásta Þorsteinsdóttir are major characters in the 2018 historical novel ''The Sealwoman's Gift'' by Sally Magnusson. Published work * Egilsson, Ólafur (1741). Foreign Relations Of Iceland
Iceland took control of its foreign affairs in 1918 when it became a sovereign country, the Kingdom of Iceland, in a personal union with the King of Denmark. As a fully independent state, Iceland could have joined the League of Nations in 1918, but chose not to do so for cost reasons. It negotiated with Denmark to initially carry out most of its foreign relations, while maintaining full control. Denmark appointed a diplomatic envoy (Ambassador) to Iceland in 1919 and Iceland reciprocated in 1920, opening an Embassy in Copenhagen. Iceland established its own Foreign Service in April 1940 when Denmark became occupied by Nazi Germany and ties between the two countries were severed. The Republic of Iceland was founded in 1944. The Icelandic foreign service grew slowly in the post-WWII period, but increased rapidly after the mid-1990s. Denmark–Iceland relations are the diplomatic relations between Denmark and Iceland. Both countries are full members of the Council of the Baltic Sea States, Nordic Council, NATO, and Council of Europe. History Denmark recognized the independence of Iceland on 1 December 1918 and the two countries remained in personal union until 1944. While in union with Denmark, the diplomatic relations of Iceland with the rest of the world were handled by Denmark. Denmark opened their embassy in Reykjavík on 4 August 1919 with Johannes Erhardt Bøggild appointed as ambassador, while Iceland opened their embassy in Copenhagen on 16 August 1920 with Sveinn Björnsson as ambassador. The Icelandic embassy was temporarily closed from 1924 to 1926 due to financial costs. King Christian X visited Iceland on 26 June 1921. Sturla (Stûrlâ in Ligurian (Romance language), Ligurian) is a quartiere of Genoa. It began life as an ancient fishing village which developed around a number of small coves – Sturla a Mare, at the mouth of the Sturla river, Vernazzola and Boccadasse (Boccadasse is now included in the neighbouring quartiere of Albaro). Sturla is located in Golfo di Sturla (Sturla Bay). Sturla is part of the Medio Levante municipality, and has a population of 8278 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2010). Helgi Ágústsson (16 October 1941) is an Icelandic former diplomat. He was the Ambassador of Iceland to the United Kingdom from 1989 to 1995, the Ambassador of Iceland to Denmark from 1999 to 2002, and the Ambassador of Iceland to the United States from 2002 to 2006. During the Cod Wars in the 1970s, he worked for the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs in London. Basketball Helgi played basketball for KR in the top-tier Icelandic basketball league and was the chairman of the club from 1966 to 1970 and 1977 to 1979. In 1982 he was elected as the chairman of the Icelandic Basketball Association where he served until 1983. Personal life Helgi is married to Hervör Jónasdóttir and together they have four children.
