The Ambassador of Ireland to Canada is the head of the Embassy of Ireland, Ottawa, and the official representative of the Government of Ireland to the Government of Canada. The Republic of Ireland Act 1948 (No. 22 of 1948) is an Act of the Oireachtas which declared that the description of Ireland was to be the Republic of Ireland, and vested in the president of Ireland the power to exercise the executive authority of the state in its external relations, on the advice of the Government of Ireland. The Act was signed into law on 21 December 1948 and came into force on 18 April 1949, Easter Monday, the 33rd anniversary of the beginning of the Easter Rising. Ray Bassett is a former Irish diplomat. Bassett was born in Dublin and attended O'Connell School. He then attended Trinity College Dublin first earning a B.A. (mod) in biochemistry in 1973 and then a PhD in biochemistry in 1979. He served as an ambassador from Ireland to Canada, Jamaica, and the Bahamas and joint Secretary to the British–Irish Intergovernmental Conference in Belfast before retiring in October 2016. Declan Kelly was the Ambassador of Ireland to Malaysia and Thailand from 2010 to 2015. Prior to that appointment he was the Ambassador of Ireland to Canada, succeeding Martin Burke. He was schooled at St. Vincent's C.B.S., Glasnevin, and is married to Anne Bernadette Kelly. The Irish Free State ( ga, Saorstát Éireann, , ; 6 December 192229 December 1937) was a state established in December 1922 under the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 1921. Eamonn C. McKee is an Irish diplomat, currently ambassador to Canada, Jamaica and The Bahamas. He was formerly ambassador to Israel and South Korea. McKee was born in Dublin. He studied at University College Dublin, and went on to receive a PhD in 1987 for his thesis on Irish economic policy 1939-52 from the National University of Ireland. McKee joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1986 where he began the first of three periods of service in Anglo-Irish Division.
