National Highway 544, commonly referred to as NH 544, (''old number'' NH 47) is a National Highway in South India connecting Salem city in Tamil Nadu to the city of Kochi in Kerala. It is also called the Salem-Kochi Highway. The highway runs through the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, connecting various important cities and towns such as Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, Palakkad, Thrissur and Kochi. It is a spur of National Highway 44, which forms the North South Corridor of the National Highway network of India.It passes south of Coimbatore. Puthukkad is a town on the banks of Kurumali River, also known as Mupliyam River, in Kerala. The town is to the south of Thrissur, to the north of Chalakudy, and west of Cheruval. The National highway NH 544 passes through thi town. Transportation Puthukkad railway station is on the Irinjalakuda-Thrissur railway line. Thiagarajar Polytechnic College, Alagappanagar is a Government-owned aided Vocational Education Institution in Thrissur district. The college was started by the educationalist and philanthropist, Dr. Alagappa Chettiar, who opened many educational institutions in Tamilnadu and Kerala. Chimmony Dam
Chimmini Wildlife sanctuary is a protected area located along the Western Ghats in Chalakudy taluk of Thrissur District of Kerala state in India. Established in 1984, the sanctuary with an area of about 85.067 km2 is on the Western slopes of the Nelliyampathi Hills. The highest peak in sanctuary is Punda peak (1116 m). Along with the neighboring Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary it forms a continuous protected area of 210 km2. It also lies just west of Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, providing some habitat connectivity with the forests of that relatively large protected area. The sanctuary consists of the watershed areas of Kurumali River and Mupliam rivers. Nestled in the sanctuary is Chimmony Dam which is built across the Chimmini river.
