Ambalang Ausalin
Ambalang Ausalin (March 4, 1943 – February 18, 2022) was a Filipino master weaver from the city of Lamitan, Basilan. Biography Ambalang was renowned for her mastery of the crafts of ''sinaluan'' and ''sputangan'', two of the most intricately designed textiles of the indigenous Yakan people, Yakan community. She learned weaving through her mother, who was previously reputed to be the best weaver in Basilan and first practiced the craft by using coconut strips. Ausalin was given the National Living Treasures Award (Philippines), National Living Treasure Award by the Philippines through the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in 2016. She died at her home in Parangbasak, Lamitan, on February 18, 2022, at the age of 78. Lamitan
Lamitan, officially the City of Lamitan (Chavacano: ''Ciudad de Lamitan''; Yakan: ''Siyudad Lamitanin''; Tausūg: ''Dāira sin Lamitan''; fil, Lungsod ng Lamitan), is a 6th class component city and ''de jure'' capital of the province of Basilan, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 100,150 people. The city is bounded on the east by the municipality of Tuburan, on the south by Tipo-Tipo, on the west by Isabela and on the north by Basilan Strait. In July 2016, the Basilan provincial government broke ground for the construction of the new provincial capitol inside the defunct 4,000-hectare University of the Philippines (UP) Land Grant in Barangay Santa Clara. Basilan
Basilan, officially the Province of Basilan ( cbk, Provincia de Basilan; yka, Wilayah Basilanin; tsg, Wilaya' sin Basilan; fil, Lalawigan ng Basilan), is an island province of the Philippines located primarily in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region. Basilan Island is the largest and northernmost of the major islands of the Sulu Archipelago. It is just off the southern coast of the geographic Zamboanga Peninsula. The National Living Treasures Award, alternatively known as the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA; ), is conferred to a person or group of artists recognized by the Government of the Philippines for their contributions to the country's intangible cultural heritage. Yakan People
The Yakan people are among the major indigenous Filipino ethnolinguistic groups in the Sulu Archipelago. Having a significant number of followers of Islam, it is considered one of the 13 Moro people, Moro groups in the Philippines. The Yakans mainly reside in Basilan but are also in Zamboanga City. They speak a language known as ''Yakan language, Bissa Yakan'', which has characteristics of both Sama-Bajau Sinama and Tausug language, Tausug (Jundam 1983: 7-8). It is written in the Malayan Arabic script, with adaptations to sounds not present in Arabic (Sherfan 1976). The Yakan have a traditional horse culture. They are renowned for their weaving traditions. Culturally, they are Sama people who eventually led a life on land, mostly in Basilan and Zamboanga city.
